President Donald Trump referenced a racial slur during a meeting with top U.S. military leaders in Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

During a 72-minute speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Trump said he had "moved a submarine or two over to the coast of Russia" in response to nuclear threats made about three months ago by Russian spokesperson Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump told the audience of mainly stoic officers that he refers to the nuclear threat as the "N-word," referencing a racial slur. "We can't let people throw around that word," Trump said. "I call it the N-word. There are two N-words, and you can't use either of them."

The president continued, "Frankly, if it does get to use, we have more than anybody else. We have better. We have newer. But it's something we don't ever want to have to think about."

It's not the first time Trump has made the reference. On June 23, the president posted on Truth Social how Medvedev was "casually throwing around the 'N-word' (Nuclear!)."

Medvedev had threateningly mentiond the Soviet Union's "dead hand" doomsday nuclear system, which automatically launched weapons upon sensing a nuclear attack on Moscow.

Trump on Aug. 1 said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to "appropriate regions" in response to Russia's nuclear threats.

"Based on the highly provocative statements" of Russian spokesperson Dmitry Medvedev, "I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that," Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time.
