How surveillance technology and the 'Reddit Detective Agency' helped search for a killer

December 20, 2025
How surveillance technology and the 'Reddit Detective Agency' helped search for a killer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More than a decade ago, a frenzied 5-day search for the Boston Marathon bombers left some lessons in its aftermath.

One was that increasingly pervasive surveillance technology could help catch the culprits. Another was that amateur online sleuths on Reddit could not.

But the intense search this week for a suspect in a Brown University shooting that killed two students and wounded nine other people turned the tables on those expectations.

Sweeping surveillance, now found in doorbells, cars and a vast network ofvehicle-tracking cameras, did eventually help track down the whereabouts of Claudio Neves Valente, the 48-year-old former Brown graduate student investigators believe was responsible for the Dec. 13 shooting and another killing two days later of an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts.

But the latest artificial intelligence-powered surveillance was of little use in the early search for a gunman who walked away from the Brown campus after the shooting and slipped unnoticed into the surrounding neighborhoods of Providence,Rhode Island. He evaded detection for days, using a hard-to-trace phone, avoiding facial recognition software by obscuring his face with a medical-type mask and switching the license plates on his rental cars.

It wasn't until a local Reddit user "blew this case right open" with an old-fashioned tip first posted on the social media platform that police were able to connect a car to Neves Valente, said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha. They finally found the suspect dead Thursday in Salem, New Hampshire, days after he likely killed himself.

The Reddit tipster known only as John is "no less than a hero," Providence Mayor Brett Smiley wrote Friday to FBI Director Kash Patel, asking for the entirety of the FBI's $50,000 award for information leading investigators to the suspect.

Strangers have invited him to Christmas dinner and suggested he get a "key to the city and free coffee and doughnuts for life," according to fellow contributors to Reddit's Providence forum.

It was a stark turn from 2013 when commentators on Reddit and other online discussion boards falsely smeared a Brown University student as a potential suspect in the deadly attack at Boston's famed marathon, just an hour's north of Providence, because of a supposed resemblance to a grainy suspect image.

"Hey Reddit, enough Boston bombing vigilantism," declared a headline in The Atlantic at the time.

"It definitely went sideways in the Boston Marathon situation," said Liza Potts, a professor at Michigan State University and director of a digital humanities lab that studied the online response. "That's why folks will jokingly refer to the 'Reddit Detective Agency' or the 'Reddit Bureau of Investigations.'"

The mistaken connection between the 2013 bombers and a missing Brown student — who was later found dead of an apparent suicide — is still remembered by many at the Ivy League school and its surrounding community.

Brown officials this week sought to swiftly tamp down another smear campaign circulating on X and other social media platforms falsely tying a current Brown student to the campus shooting because of his ethnicity, perceived political views and supposed resemblance to a police video of a person of interest. The "unimaginable nightmare" of false accusations led to "non-stop death threats and hate speech," the student said in a statement.

Frustrated that tip lines could be jammed with nonsense, U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat and former state attorney general, urged social media speculators to "just shut up."

"There is simply no need from an investigative point of view for people who have no idea what they're talking about to offer their stupid and ill-informed views about what happened all over the internet," Whitehouse said from Congress on Wednesday.

But Potts said some social media has been working better than others, and "of all the spaces that I study, Reddit seems to be getting it right more than not."

Harmful accusations were largely absent from Reddit's Providence forum, in part because volunteer moderators who manage Reddit's subject matter forums — known as subreddits — are largely responsible for keeping the peace.

Reddit's chief moderator for the Providence subreddit said in an interview that he's been on the platform for about 15 years and remembers the trauma that false Boston Marathon report caused.

"The Providence subreddit is very sensitive about (not) trying to go on a witch hunt or the mob mentality," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid doxing and because of the platform's culture of anonymity.

The Associated Press also reached out to the tipster on Tuesday, a day after he wrote on Reddit urging police to look into a Nissan sedan with Florida license plates. Fellow Redditors urged him to contact the FBI, and he said he did.

He didn't respond to requests for comment and later posted that he doesn't plan to talk with media. When he finally met with police on Wednesday — after approaching them on the street and identifying himself as the Reddit tipster — his information gave new life to a stalled investigation.

With a known vehicle, Providence police started looking through the footage from dozens of AI-powered cameras positioned around the city that can read license plates as well as other identifying details about a car, such as make, color, side damage or even bird droppings on the window.

The cameras, run by surveillance company Flock Safety, spotted his vehicle at least 14 times starting nearly two weeks before the shooting, according to a police affidavit. Providence police could then ask Flock-using police agencies in nearby cities and states to look for the same car, although New Hampshire — because of privacy restrictions on how long they can hold images — doesn't have any.

It was a breakthrough Flock was happy to boast about, especially as wariness remains in Providence's immigrant communities about more aggressive federal immigration enforcement. Flock says each of its customers decides when to share camera data, and the city doesn't share it with federal immigration agents. But some still want more safeguards.

"Once you know what they are, you see them everywhere," said Madalyn McGunagle, a policy associate at the ACLU of Rhode Island. "People notice because they're distinct-looking — a solar panel on top with a little oval camera underneath."

But unlike the residential doorbell cameras that spotted him walking around Providence, had Neves Valente walked by a Flock camera, it wouldn't have detected him.

"It is a technical impossibility. The camera does not have an ability for a user to search for people," said Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley in an interview Friday. "Our cameras are focused on vehicles because if you look at America, people drive. It is very hard to get anywhere on foot."

"For the majority of our cities, they want to just know who is coming in and who is leaving," he said.

Still, without John the tipster — whom local Redditors dubbed "Reddit Guy" — no one would have known how he left.

"Someone who is in the area and sees stuff all the time, they're going to be better in a lot of ways than a random camera," said the Providence subreddit's moderator. "John saw this guy going back and forth, unlocking his car and all that, and he just thought it was kind of weird."

Starting over

Greece was recently named the world'sbest place to retirefor 2026, according to an annual index by International Living. Panama and Costa Rica ranked second and third on the list and are particularly popular with North Americans.

However, the grass isn't necessarily greener abroad. Navigating foreign tax systems and bank accounts can be particularly confusing. CNN spoke to a few experts who have done it and learned a few hard lessons along the way. Watch their tips in the video above.

Finally, here are a couple of real-life stories of people who made the leap, one to Europe and one to Asia.

New Jersey native Barbara Olpinski moved from Chicago to Poland in 2020, but struggled to adapt to her husband's home country. "I cried copious tears," she tells CNN, and she was worried she'd never fit in. However, she took up anew hobbywhich helped with the transition.

Victoria Kjos, in her 70s, moved to Bali in 2022 after becoming disillusioned with her life in the US. She tells CNN that she immediately felt "very comfortable" there and loved the province's "calm energy." However, she says she made a lot of "missteps" when it came to finding somewhere to live: Here'swhat she learned.

Lives of the rich and luxurious

If you're seeking a less permanent life change, perhaps a brief trip into the giddy heights of luxury might tempt you.

Season three of HBO's "The White Lotus" was filmed at several hotels in Thailand, including the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket. CNN Travel's Karla Cripps visited earlier this year and took us on a quick tour.

Magnificently grand yachts are thelatest big thingin the luxury hotel space, with the Ritz-Carlton, the Four Seasons, Orient Express and Aman all competing with launches on the high seas.

"We are introducing people to cruising that would never have considered it," Tina Edmundson, president of luxury for Marriott International, tells CNN of the boutique-style offerings that are at the other end of the scale from the boom insuper-sized cruise ships.

Aviation innovations

In 1982, Air Florida Flight 90 crashed at Washington National Airport, exposing the dangers of ice accumulation when flying in winter. It was a tragic event that changed how US airlines deal with freezing conditions.

CNN's Alexandra Skores went behind the scenes and under the planes at Chicago O'Hare to see how specialized deicer crews keep passengers safe.

Dulles International, outside Washington DC, was supposed to be the airport of the future when it opened in the 1960s. It was the first US airport to be built for the jet age and its iconic mobile lounges, or people-movers, are what has made Dulles unique. After 60 years of operation, however, Dulles International regularly makes it onto "worst airport" lists, with President Trump recently describing it as "terrible." Here'sthe storyof how the innovation that made it so original would also make it so unpopular.

Taiwan attacker planned assault that killed 3 and injured 11, authorities say

Taiwan attacker planned assault that killed 3 and injured 11, authorities say

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwanese authorities said Saturday the suspect whokilled three peopleand injured 11 others in knife and smoke-grenade attacks in the island's capital had planned the assaults and set fires at other locations earlier in the day.

The suspect, identified as a 27-year-old man named Chang Wen, fell to his death from a department store building in Taipei after the attack on Friday.

The assaults shocked Taiwan, where violent crime is rare, prompting authorities to step up security at crowded spots and big events, including its New Year's Eve celebration that usually attracts many locals and tourists to an outdoor countdown.

Chang Jung-Hsin, director-general of the National Police Agency, said the suspect began a series of attacks at 3:40 p.m. local time, first setting fire to roads and causing damage to cars and motorbikes. He also set fire to where he lived.

The suspect later threw smoke grenades near two exits of the Taipei Main metro station and used a knife to fatally wound a person, Chang said. After the attack, the suspect took an underground path to return to the hotel where he was staying. Then he threw more smoke grenades and used his knife to kill another person outside the Eslite Spectrum Nanxi department store, the official said.

He also fatally wounded another person on the fourth floor of the department store building before he jumped from the fifth floor to his death, Chang said.

The official said the smoke grenades the assailant used could be purchased online and that the suspect visited the sites before the attack.

"The suspect planned an indiscriminate attack. He acted according to his plan," Chang said, adding the initial investigation did not find that the suspect acted with anyone else.

Authorities were still investigating his motive. Chang said the suspect had voluntarily served in the military but was fired for drunk driving. The suspect was wanted from July after failing to report to military service, he added.

"The suspect hasn't contacted his family for more than two years," Chang said. "They said the suspect has been interested in guns and weapons since he was young."

Six injured people were still in the hospital. Two were being treated in intensive care units, but their conditions were stable after surgeries, authorities said.

After receiving briefings from officials, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te called for a thorough investigation into the incident, looking into the suspect's background, motives, financial resources and whether he received help from others.

Swedish actress May Britt, former wife of Sammy Davis Jr., dies at 91

December 19, 2025
20th Century-Fox/Everett May Britt stars in 'The Blue Angel' in 1959

20th Century-Fox/Everett

May Britt, the Swedish actress who faced racism for her 1960 marriage to Rat Pack star Sammy Davis Jr., died of natural causes Dec. 11 at a hospital in Los Angeles, son Mark Davis toldThe Hollywood Reporter. She was 91.

Britt was known for films such as the 1959 dramaThe Blue AngelandMurder, Inc., in which she sang and danced, as well as the 1956 production ofWar and Peace, in which she costarred alongside Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda, and the Korean War-setThe Hunters, with Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner, in 1958.

Born in Switzerland, Britt was discovered by Italian producer Carlo Ponti when she was 18. She did several international films before landing in America in the late '50s.

Britt met Davis after one of his performances in L.A. and asked her to come to a party, which their daughter, Tracey Davis, wrote about in her 2014 bookSammy Davis: A Personal Journey With My Father.

By June 1960, the couple announced that they were engaged. They faced serious backlash for their relationship at a time when interracial marriage was forbidden in 31 states.

PerTHR, the younger Davis' book alleged that they were pressured into postponing their nuptials by none other than Frank Sinatra, Davis' costar in the 1960 movieOcean's Eleven. The friend of presidential candidate John F. Kennedy wanted them to wait until after the election to marry, despite invitations having already gone out. Davis, who had campaigned for Kennedy, waited.

The book also says the couple was disinvited to the inauguration gala three days before it was to be held, because Kennedy didn't want to upset Southern members of Congress.

They welcomed Tracey in 1961, and their adoption of sons Mark and Jeff followed.

The couple divorced in 1968.

Britt appeared in a handful of projects afterward, including episodes ofMission: ImpossibleandThe Most Deadly Game, and the 1976 horror filmHaunts.

Britt is survived by her sons — daughter Tracey Davis died in 2020 — as well as a sister, Margot, and grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan, Sam, Montana, Greer, and Chase.

  • The film revolves around Kevin McAllister, an eight-year-old boy who is accidentally left home alone over the holidays

  • As Jason said in a new episode of his podcast New Heights, it's hard to understand how a family wouldn't go to great lengths to ensure the child was okay

Jason Kelce is pointing out what he calls a "ridiculous" plot hole inHome Alone, which celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2025.

Speaking alongside his wifeKylie Kelceon the latest episode of his New Heights podcast, Jason, 38, said he doesn't buy that the McAllister family would not get a friend or neighbor to check on Kevin after they accidentally leave him home alone over the holidays.

"This might be the most unrelatable parents I've ever seen in a Christmas movie. I mean, listen: everybody goes to — you leave without one of your kids at some point — I feel like that's like a very standard thing. You should not feel shame," Jason said. "Maybe if you take off on an airplane, you should feel some shame there."

He continued: "But who the f--- — like I just don't understand — how you can't call somebody to go get this f---ing kid?"

When his brother,New Heightsco-hostTravis Kelce, noted that there were no cell phones in November 1990, when the film premiered, Jason responded, "In the ridiculous premise that this one neighborhood is out of phone activity — you can call the cops."

When his wife and brother noted that the family does call the cops in the film, he replied, "She called the cops in like that area."

"If they aren't helping, I'm calling other cops, I'm calling family members that are still there, I'm calling friends," Jason said.

And when Kylie said that would "ruin the plot of the movie," Jason added, "There is precisely 0% chance that I am just waiting a couple days before I can fly back to Chicago to see what happens with Kevin."

"This is the most ridiculous premise," Jason added.

While his brother Travis disagreed with Jason's take, he did say "the dad in this movie was very disinterested in finding Kevin. He was like, 'Alright, sweetie, you're gonna try, I mean it says there's no flights for another three days...'"

Epstein files' takeaways: Vaginal cream, celebs and redacted photos

Epstein files' takeaways: Vaginal cream, celebs and redacted photos

WASHINGTON ―Previously stashed away pictures of former President Bill Clintonand other celebrities have found their way into the coveted Justice Department's "Epstein library."

The Dec. 19 release includeshundreds of thousands of documents aboutaccused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

But for lack of a good search function, the large volume of materials left it difficult to find specific items. The release provided few references toPresident Donald Trump.

Not all the Epstein documents were released, despite the deadline imposed by Congress. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said lawyers are still sifting through the materials to ensure that victims aren't named or identified, and it could take several weeks to produce the remaining hundreds of thousands of pages.

But here are five takeaways as USA TODAY reporters race to review and catalog documents and photos.

Heavy redactions − and inconsistent ones

Many of the documents released are heavily redacted, limiting what new information might be gleaned after the months-long push by survivors for transparency about what the government knew about the disgraced financier ― and when.

Among the redactions areentire documentsthat are longer than 100 pages and hundreds of photos. The redactions are also spotty. People whose faces are redacted in some photos are not redacted in others.

The Epstein Files Transparency Act allows the Justice Department to withhold documents that name victims, portray child sex abuse or that could hurt criminal prosecutions. But it also states that records cannot be withheld, delayed or redacted "on the basis of embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity, including to any government official, public figure, or foreign dignitary."

The restrictions covered documents that detailed how lawyers deliberated about their decisions, the work lawyers produced within the department and communications between lawyers and their clients.

"These privileges are based in common law – not statutes – and Congress is fully aware of them," Blanche wrote. "Although the Act broadly categorizes items required to be produced, the Act does not include language expressly requiring the Department to produce privileged materials."

Members of Congress werealready grumbling about the scope of the redactions. A lead sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-California, warned that department officials could face prosecution if they withhold or heavily redact Epstein files that are required to be publicized under the new law.

"Let me be very clear: We need a full release," Khanna saidin a video posted on X. "Anyone who tampers with these documents or conceals documents, or engages in excessive redaction, will be prosecuted because of obstruction of justice."

The attorney general does have the ability to redact or withhold information that personally identifies victims or would jeopardize an active federal investigation, but those redactions must be accompanied by a written justification and submitted to Congress within 15 days

Clinton appears in cache of new Epstein photos, as do multiple celebrities

Clinton is featured in several of the newly unveiled pictures, including in a hot tub, with a woman whose face is obscured and with Epstein's associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.

The picture with Maxwell was taken at the Winston Churchill War Rooms in London.

Clinton, who sometimes flew aboard Epstein's private plane, has previously been listed in Epstein documents. He contributed to a 50thbirthday book in 2003.

ButClinton has denied knowing anythingabout Epstein's alleged sex trafficking. Hisspokesperson, Angel Urena, said on social media Clinton was among the people who "knew nothing and cut Epstein off before his crimes came to light."

Celebrities including Mick Jagger, the lead singer and co-songwriter for the Rolling Stones, to famed newsman Walter Cronkite also appear in the more than a thousand photos in the release.

Jagger, Epstein, Clinton and another man can be seen sitting around a table. Cronkite appears with Epstein in another picture.

Actor Kevin Spacey and comedian Chris Tucker appear in pictures with Clinton and Maxwell. Singers Michael Jackson and Diana Ross appear in another picture with Clinton.

None of the celebrities has been accused of wrongdoing with Epstein.

Epstein library search function unhelpful

Congress directed that the Epstein records be publicly searchable. This would allow the public to access the massive trove of investigative files and call up basic queries for names.

But searches pull few results. Earlier in the evening, "Trump" or "Clinton" come up blank.

Some of the specific files that can be downloaded from the department's website can be searched. But the Epstein Files Transparency Act required the documents "in a publicly searchable format."

The files include photographs, contact lists, flight logs, business records and memos, court documents and more. Many are hundreds of pages long and the lack of a search function forced a review of each document individually.

House Democrats on the Oversight Committee released photos from Jeffrey Epstein's email on Dec. 12, 2025, that show President Donald Trump with Epstein in this undated photograph.

Trump mentioned in lawsuit against Epstein estate

One place where Trump's name came up was in afederal lawsuit in New York in 2020by an Epstein victim against his estate.

The lawsuit alleged that Epstein took the 14-year-old girl to Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. The victim described Epstein elbowing Trump and asking, "This is a good one, right?" Trump allegedly smiled and nodded in agreement, according to the lawsuit. The victim said she felt uncomfortable but was too young to know why.

Trump, who was friends with Epstein in the 1990s before they had a falling out, has been photographed with Epstein and mentioned before in his flight logs.

But Trump has strongly denied wrongdoing with Epstein.

One of Epstein's victims, the late Virginia Giuffre, said in a 2016 deposition said of Trump she "didn't physically see him have sex with any of the girls." Maxwell told the deputy attorney general in July she "never witnessed the President in any inappropriate setting in any way."

A glimpse inside Epstein's medicine cabinet

Three different kinds of medicines for feminine yeast infections and itching, as well as douche, were among the items listed in an inventory for a medical supplies closet at Epstein's home.

The inventory of more than 70 items, listed by shelf, is in a folder with documents labeled evidence from the Palm Beach Police Department and the FBI.

Hundreds of the files include images of items found either during that initial 2006 investigation or pulled from Epstein's trash in the months before. The random items include household receipts, grocery lists, pay stubs for Epstein, bras, picture frames, books, CDs, floppy disks and a massage table.

Evidence gathered during police investigations of Epstein include two messages left by a Jean-Luc about a curable virus that could cause impotence. The images were released by the US Dept. of Justice without location information, dates or context.

Police also found two notes about missed calls from a Jean-Luc, possibly Epstein's longtime associate model agent Jean-Luc Brunel who committed suicide in 2022 while facing charges of raping a minor. Both stated that the caller had spoken to a doctor about a curable virus that could cause impotence if not treated.

Also included isa 96 page incident reportdetailing each step of the Palm Beach Police Department's original investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.

Life changed for Jews in Australia this week. Will it ever be the same?

For Australia's tiny Jewish population, Bondi Beach was a refuge within a vast country that offered sanctuary to families fleeing a seething hate that killed six million of their kind within the lifetime of some of their oldest members.

For decades, they laid roots in a Sydney suburb built around a white sandy beach where each year millions of tourists kick off their shoes to be transported to a postcard world of beautiful people and friendly lifesavers wearing red and yellow caps.

It's the image Australia wants to project to the world – of a multicultural haven where the conflicts of countries thousands of miles away are left at the shoreline.

But last Sunday horror and hatred rained down onto a Bondi lawn, where15 peoplewere shot dead by two gunmen with six licensed firearms.

It was Australia's worst mass shooting since a lone gunman killed 35 people in an attack on tourists in Tasmania almost 30 years ago. This time was different.

"They wanted to kill Jews," said mourner Carole, through tears near a carpet of flowers at Bondi Pavilion, a local landmark that now marks the site of a massacre.

"All we want to do is live in peace, work hard, pay our taxes and love our fellow Australians," said Carole, whose daughters begged her not to give her last name for fear of retaliation.

"Jewish people always feel they are the country first," Carole said. "As well as being strong Jews, we are neverjustJewish. And now that's how we feel."

"Australia has let us down," she said, angrily. "It's actually beyond belief."

'This country has changed'

Australia notes with pride that it has the biggest population of Holocaust survivors per capita outside of Israel. Most live in Sydney and Melbourne. Many call Bondi home.

This week, Jews in this picturesque pocket of Australia's eastern coast buried their dead in funerals livestreamed to the diaspora worldwide.

The youngest victim,Matilda, was 10 years old. Among the flowers at Bondi Pavilion, toys and images of bees could be seen – a nod to Matilda's middle name and the "sting" in her vibrant personality.

Dorienne Light wore an Israeli flag across her shoulders as she paid her respects at the memorial on Wednesday. Her son had handed her the flag as she walked out the door.

"I felt satisfied that the symbol wasn't subtle – it's who I am," said Light, who this week has struggled to distract herself from heartache.

"This country has changed," she said. "I used to be so proud of where we lived. We need to reclaim that."

Do you think it's possible? "Yes, I do."

Under this leadership? "No."

A community in grief directed its anger squarely at the Australian government, accusing it of allowing antisemitism to fester for two years before Sunday's devastating attack.

Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg, a member of the opposition Liberal party, whose mother arrived in Australia as a refugee from the Holocaust, channeled deep feelings of betrayal in a speech at the memorial.

"Our prime minister, our government, has allowed Australia to be radicalized on his watch," he said on Wednesday, surrounded by mourners and media cameras.

Two homemade ISIS flagswere found in a car near the massacre site that had been fitted with improvised explosive devices that police disarmed before they caused harm.

More than a decade ago, ISIS became the latest militant group to use religious extremism to recruit disaffected supporters in the West before a US-backed operation defeated its forces in Syria in 2019.

Before Sunday's massacre, the alleged shooters were said to havespent a month in a hotel in Mindanao in the Philippines, an area where ISIS-aligned insurgents still hold ambitions to declare an independent Islamist state.

It was a rare trip out of the country for Sajid Akram, the 50-year-old shooter shot dead by police, who left Australia just three times in the years from 2001, according to officials.

An Indian national, Akram arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998, which was later transferred to a partner visa. His son, Naveed, an Australian citizen, now faces 59 charges, including 15 of murder and 40 of attempted murder as well as a terrorism offense.

When asked by a reporter if he could have done more to prevent Sunday's attack, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, "Anyone in this position would regret not doing more, and any inadequacies which are there. But what we need to do is to move forward."

With that, he announced a tranche of tougher restrictions on hate speech, including an "aggravated hate speech" offense, along with powers for the home affairs minister to cancel visas held by hate preachers.

"We have all seen vision of hate preachers where we are shocked that that is happening in Australia," said Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.

"It is not representative of what people expect in Australia, and it's certainly not representative of the Muslim community in Australia. There have been repeated checks as to whether they have crossed legal thresholds. They haven't. The thresholds are changing."

A minority targeted

At 6 a.m., the usual opening time, Avner's bakery in Sydney's Surry Hills remained closed. A sign on its doors explained that "the world has changed. Our world has changed."

"In the wake of the pogrom at Bondi one thing has become clear. It is no longer possible to make outwardly, publicly, proudly Jewish places and events safe in Australia," the sign read.

Known for its delicious bagels and chocolate babkas, Avner's was a popular meeting place where customers would pull up a stool and chat on the sidewalk.

The notice said the bakery had been subject to "almost ceaseless" antisemitic attacks for two years, and they were calling it quits, for the safety of staff and customers. Owner Ed Halmagyi told The Sydney Morning Herald that feces had been thrown at the bakery's windows and glue poured into its locks.

The owners of another local business Lox in a Box, which sells Polish bagels and burgers, woke up the day after the shootings to find a string of one-star reviews.

"While deeply upsetting, we were unfortunately not surprised," said owners Candy Berger and Lauren Jensen in an email to CNN. "Moments like this often expose the undercurrent of antisemitism that still exists, even here in Australia."

Carole said a common subject of conversation among local Jewish families was where they would go, if things got worse.

"We've had friends who've just left to go live in Israel. And the other plan B would be going to the US, because there are lots of places where the US is much safer," she said. "There are a lot of Jews. They're not such a small minority."

Antisemitic attacks surged in the two years since Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, when militants terrorized Israelis in cross-border raids, killing 1,200 Israelis and taking 251 hostages.

Two days later, Australian authorities lit up the sails of the Sydney Opera House with the blue and white of the Israeli flag, as Israel ordereda "complete siege" of Gaza.

The show of support for Israel brought protesters to the steps of the Opera House, where they waved Palestinian flags and were accused of shouting anti-Jewish slurs the organizers blamed on"a tiny fringe of vile antisemitic attendees."

At that stage, hundreds of Palestinians had been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza.

But by August 2025, more than 60,000 Palestinians had been killed, according to the United Nations.Hundreds of starving Palestinians had been shot at aid collection points, and nearly 12,000 children were suffering from acute malnutrition. Public anger swelled in Australia, much like it did across swathes of the rest of the globe, as images of the war were streamed into digital devices.

Peace seemed further away than ever, and Australia was under pressure to break with theUnited States and join allies Britain, France and Canada in recognizing a Palestinian state.

In Australia, pro-Palestinian groups urged Australians to send a message to Israel by walking across Sydney Harbour Bridge – and an estimated90,000 people turnedup. New South Wales authorities had tried to ban it in the courts on safety grounds, but a judge ruled that it could go ahead.

While the protest was directly in response to the Israeli government and its war in Gaza, some Jews in Australia fear such demonstrations can lead to a spillover of hate aimed at local targets. Instances of vandalism, spray-painted slurs and other antisemitic hate language have surged in the last two years.

On Friday, the state's Premier Chris Minns announced plans to ban protests held around terror events to prevent "intimidation, escalation and violence," as NSW Police warned people not to attend unauthorized demonstrations this weekend.

"The truth of the matter is, we can't risk another mass demonstration on that scale in New South Wales," said Minns. "The implications can be seen, in my view, not just on Sunday, but anti-Jewish, antisemitic graffiti and arson attacks through our community over the last two years."

The Australian Palestine Advocacy Network, a coalition of groups advocating for Palestinian human rights, rejected any link between anti-war protests and the Bondi terror attack.

"Conflating mass demonstrations, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge March for Humanity, with antisemitic graffiti or criminal acts is both irresponsible and misleading," APAN President Nasser Mashni said in a statement.

"Those acts should be investigated and prosecuted on their own merits, not used to justify blanket restrictions on lawful assembly."

The war on hate

Eradicating deep-seated hate is an exhausting, challenging process.

Matt Quinn, the founder of Exit Australia, a nonprofit working to deradicalize those with extreme hate, says it can take as long as 18 months to convince radicalized people to adopt a different view.

He agrees Australia's hate laws haven't been strong enough – and notes an unintended consequence of this has provided tools for recruitment for white supremacists, angry over a perceived leniency toward certain Muslim clerics preaching more extremist ideology.

White supremacists "feel like they're being attacked, and they feel like they haven't done anything," Quinn said.

"They just blame the Jews for every little problem they see in their life. Anything that's gone wrong, whether it's a government policy or whatever, the Jews are to blame," he said.

His advice for anyone who identifies hate within themselves or a close family member or friend is to seek help before it escalates into the unthinkable.

Sunday's attack shocked a nation that thought its strong gun laws could prevent US-style mass shootings, and authorities quickly announced the most sweeping gun reforms since Tasmania's Port Arthur massacre.

A massive gun buy-back– the biggest since 1996 – is expected to see hundreds of thousands of guns surrendered to authorities.

And New South Wales vowed to impose the toughest gun laws of any state with new limits on the number of guns and who can own them.

As investigations continue into the perpetrators of Sunday's shooting, Australia has rallied around its Jewish community – seen in the dozens of messages of support now stuck to the window Avner's bakery, the encouraging posts to Lox in a Box, in the notes on the piles of flowers, in the donations to the families of victims.

They've also rallied aroundAhmed al Ahmed, the Muslim father who risked his life by tackling an alleged shooter and seizing the gun during Sunday's attack.

The Australian National Imams Council said in a statement that the attack had targeted the entire community – including Muslims. "We unequivocally reject these acts and reaffirm our shared responsibility to uphold respect, safety, and dignity for all communities in Australia."

For Australia, a country separated by sea from horrors unfolding elsewhere, the Bondi attack has delivered a disturbing reminder that no country is safe from hate.

As a tragic week ended, thousands swam and paddled on boards off the coast of Bondi as the community came together to heal. On Saturday, Bondi's famed surf lifesavers – many who rushed to the scene as first responders – held a ceremony of remembrance on the sand.

Flags across the country will fly at half-mast on Sunday on a national day of reflection. Key buildings will be lit up in the national colors of green and gold, and lights will beam from the top of Bondi Pavilion, a nod to Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of light that families were celebrating at Bondi Beach before their world was torn apart.

Every day this week, Rabbi Yossi Friedman has attended the Bondi memorial saying out loud the names of those killed, with a tribute to each one – so that observers don't forget who they were, and what they stood for.

"That is what happens when hate goes unchecked," he told CNN as he stood by the flower memorial, where mourners bowed their heads in grief.

"We're going to build a movement, a movement of light," he said. "We're going to show everyone, including our leadership, that we are united in this fight against hate."
