White House withdraws hospitality executive as nominee to lead the National Park Service

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — President Donald Trump is withdrawing his nomination of ahospitality company executiveto lead the National Park Service, the White House announced Monday.

Associated Press

The withdrawal of nominee Scott Socha comes asthe park servicehas been shaken by widespread firings as part of the Trump administration's pledge to sharply reduce its size.

No reason was immediately given forSocha's withdrawal.

The park service is currently overseen by an acting director, agency comptroller Jessica Bowron. It did not have a Senate-confirmed director during Trump's first term, when it was led by a series of acting directors.

Socha is president for parks and resorts at Buffalo, New York-based Delaware North, which has service contracts with numerous parks and describes itself as one of the world's largest privately owned entertainment and hospitality companies. A White House spokesperson had said when he was nominated in February that Socah was “totally qualified” to execute Trump’s plans for the park system.

But some conservation groups had questioned if Socha's private sector work provided the experience he would need to oversee hundreds of national parks and monuments that range from the Statue of Liberty and other cultural sites, to remote sites in the Utah desert.

The Associated Press sent email messages to the White House and Interior Department seeking comment on Socha's withdrawal.

Thousands of employees have been fired or otherwise left the park service since Trump took office.

Emily Douce with the National Parks Conservation Association, an advocacy group, said Monday that the next director for the service needs to “undo the damage.”

“It’s very unfortunate that our parks have gone more than a year without a permanent director at a time when they need strong, steady leadership the most,” Douce said.

The Republican administration's proposed budget for next year would reduce staffing to 9,200 employees. That's down almost 30% compared to 2025 levels.

The park service's operating budget would be cut by more than $1 billion, to $2.2 billion, for the 2027 fiscal year that starts in October.

Similar cuts proposed for 2026 were blocked by lawmakers in Congress after park supporters and former employees warned the administration's proposal would have effectively gutted the agency.

The administration also has faced blowback for theremoval or planned removalof national park exhibits about slavery, climate change and the destruction of Native American culture. In February, a federal judge said an exhibit about nine people enslaved by George Washington must be restored at his former home in Philadelphia after the Trump administration had takenit down.

Administration officials have said they are removing “disparaging” messages under an order last year from Trump. Critics accuse it of trying towhitewash the nation’s history.

Under Trump's interior secretary, Doug Burgum, the park service has started charging millions of international tourists who visit U.S. parks each year$100 each to visitsites including Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. The service also has put Trump's image onto its annual passes for U.S. citizens, drawing a lawsuit from environmentalists who said the move was illegal.

Undermanned Wolves try to eliminate balanced Nuggets in Game 6

Faced with key injuries, the Minnesota Timberwolves will try to close out their Western Conference first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 on Thursday in Minneapolis.

Field Level Media

Minnesota successfully managed Game 4 despite losing star Anthony Edwards and his starting backcourt mate, Donte DiVincenzo, early. But with Edwards sidelined due to a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee and DiVincenzo gone with a torn right Achilles tendon, the Timberwolves dropped a close-out opportunity on Monday in Denver, 125-113.

Edwards and DiVincenzo were both catalysts as Minnesota gained the early advantage in the series, with Edwards going for 30 points and 10 rebounds in Game 2. DiVincenzo scored a total of 31 points in Games 2 and 3, both Timberwolves victories.

With the two perimeter playmakers out Monday, Minnesota committed 25 turnovers -- two more than the Timberwolves lost in their previous two games combined, and a team-high dating back to before the All-Star break.

"A lot of silly, forced play by guys trying to make something out of nothing," Minnesota coach Chris Finch said of the Game 5 turnover woes.

Finch also pointed to Denver's defensive adjustments, noting that the Nuggets "put two (defenders)" on Ayo Dosunmu for the first time in the series.

Dosunmu, a late-season acquisition via trade from Chicago, emerged as the hero in Game 4 after Edwards and DiVincenzo exited. He scored 43 points, bookended by performances of 25 and 18 points, respectively, in Games 3 and 5.

Aside from Julius Randle's 27 points, however, no other Minnesota player managed more than 13 in Monday's loss.

Denver, meanwhile, got 18-plus points from four of its five starters in the elimination contest. Among the quartet was forward Spencer Jones, who has seen a significant uptick in minutes with Aaron Gordon dealing with a calf injury.

Jones, who scored 11 total points in the series' first four games, went for 20 in Game 5. Gordon, who averaged 16.2 points per game in the regular season, played limited minutes in Game 4, but missed both Games 3 and 5 and is listed as questionable for Thursday.

Jones, who averaged just 5.5 points per game in the regular season, delivered his highest-scoring performance since Dec. 1 (28 points) at an opportune time.

"It's something that happened throughout the season, guys going down and me getting an opportunity to start," Jones said. "I'll get more minutes, but the role is still the same, the duties are still the same."

Building on the momentum from his making four 3-pointers Monday, Jones could play a role in Denver's key perimeter scorer, Jamal Murray, finding cleaner looks from beyond the arc.

Murray has scored 30 points three times in the series, and with his 24 in Game 5, he is up to 26.0 points per game through the five contests. That's a team-high, outpacing three-time league Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic's 25.4 ppg.

However, Murray has gone 0-for from deep twice, including the Game 3 loss.

Jokic, meanwhile, had his best game of the series Monday, finishing as a plus-18 with 27 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds. He was a plus-one, minus-21 and minus-12 in Denver's three losses.

His attacker, David Summers-Smith,has schizophreniaand was displaying symptoms of psychosis at the time of the 2024 incident.

He subsequently pleaded not guilty to the murder due tomental impairment.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court justice Dina Yehia, determined Summers-Smith did commit the murder but could not be held criminally responsible.

She ordered Summers-Smith to be held indefinitely in a mental health facility.

In her consideration, Justice Yehia said: "I am satisfied that the accused has established on a balance of probabilities that at the time he stabbed the deceased, he was suffering from a mental health impairment that had the effect that he did not know that the act was wrong: that is, he could not reason with a moderate degree of sense and composure about whether the act, as perceived by reasonable people, was wrong."

In a victim impact statement read out by Justice Yehia, Mr Mallett’s partner Caitlin O’Keeffe said his death has caused immense emotional and financial strain for the family.

"It affects not just today but every future moment that he should have been part of, and everyday moments that he’s already missed," Ms O’Keefe said in a letter.

The court also heard Mr Mallett’s father Roy no longer enjoys the hobbies he used to share with his son and struggles to find the motivation to do anything.

Any potential recovery for Summers-Smith will be monitored by the Mental Health Review tribunal, which has the power to revise his detention order.

Epstein documents reveal purpose of strange striped building on his Caribbean island

The Epstein files have shed light on the purposeof a mysterious blue and white striped building on the pedophile financier’s Caribbean island of Little Saint James.

The Independent US

Correspondence showed Epstein referredto the building as a “mosque” on multiple occasions, though the plans for the structure were changed multiple times, having at one point been designated as a “music room,” a chapel and a pavilion.

“It should look old… it will be for the inside walls, like a mosque, I would love to see examples,”Epstein wrote in correspondence to a contactin Uzbekistan, discussing types of tiles to decorate the building, which is topped with a golden dome.

It is unclear if the building was ever actually used for its purpose as a place of Islamic worship. Epstein himself identified as a secular Jew.

However, the documents reveal a years-long obsession with Arabic and Muslim art and culture, evidenced in his interactions with powerful figures including Emirati Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and Mohamed Bin Salman, who would later become Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.

Photos released as part of the files show Epstein with Sulayem – who was forced to resign from his position as head of Dubai-based cargo logistics company DP World due to his association with the financier – inspecting a large, elaborate tapestry on the floor of his New York townhouse in 2014.

In 2003, Epstein claimed toVanity Fairthat he owned “the largest Persian rug you’ll ever see in a private home – so big, it must have come from a mosque.”

While serving jail time in Florida in 2009, Epstein had hired architects to draw up plans for a large “hammam” Turkish bathhouse and spa, complete with baths, massage parlors and a private terrace.

However, the documents reveal a years-long obsession with Arabic and Muslim art and culture, evidenced in his interactions with powerful figures including Emirati Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem (pictured) (House Oversight Committee)

These plans were abandoned in favor of a “music room” the documents show, though the designs were still Middle Eastern in style. In 2011 he asked his Uzbek contact about acquiring the tiles for his “mosque” – detailing specific details such as correct lettering to retain authenticity.

Epstein exercised his substantial wealth and influence to acquire extravagant pieces for the building. In 2017, the documents show, he met with Aziza Al Ahmadi, an aide to a consultant for the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia.

At that time negotiations were being made for the shipment of a special tent to be shipped to Epstein’s island, as well as more items “for the mosque.”

“We are receiving 3 pieces from the Kaaba,” Epstein’s assistant told a customs broker, apparently referring to the stone cube building that stands at the center of the Islamic holy site of Mecca.

While serving jail time in Florida in 2009, Epstein had hired architects to draw up plans for a large ‘hammam’ Turkish bathhouse and spa, complete with baths, massage parlors and a private terrace (Department of Justice)

One of the items had been “used inside the Kaaba,” according to the document and another was the Kiswa – the outer covering of the structure, which has enormous religious significance.

The covering is replaced every year, created by hundreds of individuals in a royal workshop, using about 1,500 pounds of silk and 250 pounds of gold and silver thread. Each one reportedly costs around $5 million.

After it has been used the Kiswa is divided up and distributed to various organizations or benefactors.

“The black piece was touched by minimum 10 million Muslims of different denominations, Sunni, Shia and others,” Al Ahmadi told Epstein in an email, highlighting the significance of the item.

“They walk around the Kaaba seven rounds then every one tries as much as they can to touch it and they kept their prayers, wishes, tears and hopes on this piece. Hoping after that all their prayers to be accepted.”

Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 after being arrested on sex trafficking charges.

Do the Rockets have reason to believe after shutting down the Lakers in Game 4?

HOUSTON—In order to achieve something that had never been done before — clawing back from a 3-0 playoff deficit — Rockets head coach Ime Udoka had to attempt the impossible by calling on a few lineups that hadn’t played more than a few seconds prior to Game 4.

Udoka had raved about the prospect of playing small for weeks leading up to the playoffs — and teased the idea every now and then — his passion about the strategy was Houston’s worst-kept secret. The potential for speed, switching, versatility and chaos as an in-game changeup outweighed the ability to predict the future.

Multiple people were also injured after the small plane crashed into the hangar after landing at the suburban Parafield Airport, north of Adelaide, at 2.10pm local time, according to the Australian Associated Press.

The collision reportedly sparked a fire.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “I have just been briefed by the Commissioner for Police (Grant Stevens) on the tragic incident at Parafield this afternoon, where a small plane has crashed into a hangar.”

“Two people have lost their lives and a number of others have been injured.

“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away, and with everyone affected by this devastating event,” he said.

An eyewitness told ABC News he saw the plane nosedive.

Joshua Swannell said: "The pitch that it took, you could hear it struggle then straight down. I looked up and saw the plane up in the corner – go up, tilt, straight back down, nosedive – over the buildings. I just heard the crash, it just happened all so quick."

"Within minutes it was just already so black, you couldn't see anything – no flames, but just all black," he told the news site.

Police and emergency services were called to an area near Kings Road at Parafield Airport.

Australia’s 7News reported that a pilot and a passenger were among those killed. Images from the crash site showed a column of black smoke.

"There are reports of injuries at the scene. There's no confirmed numbers at this stage," senior constable Matt Brown from SA Police said.

The incident, authorities say, involved a twin-engined Diamond DA42 aircraft. According to 7News, at least 10 airport ground crew who were inside the hangar were taken to the hospital with serious burns.

Metropolitan Fire Service chief officer, Jeff Swann, told the outlet: “These fires were intensified by the amount of fuel that was inside the hanger.”

He said a number of student pilots had to be escorted out of the hangar by firefighters. Planes that were parked in the hanger at the time also sustained damage in the crash and fire.

According to South Australia Police chief inspector, Andrew McCracken, one person remained in a life-threatening condition at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and two others were in a serious condition.

Harper's Bazaar Simone Ashley

Simone Ashley is the latest in a growing list of stars to turn to Central Saint Martins’sMacy Grimshaw. And it’s no wonder why.

Last month, the London-based emerging designer made headlines when her “Paper Doll” look found its way toHarry Styles’sKiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionallyalbum art. The placement felt inevitable, given her long-established working relationship with the man behind Styles’s wardrobe—Harry Lambert—and her growing list of celebrity endorsements spanningPinkPantheress,Emma Corrin, andLola Young. Still, for a student wrapping up her Master’s degree, the opportunity could only be described as “insane.”

Now, Ashley has joined in on the fun. Working with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, the actor selected a teal-blue silk slip for her trip to London, where she spent the past week promotingThe Devil Wears Prada 2alongside Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.

Printed with the image of a red slip, the piece offered a dress-on-dress inception moment. Red spaghetti straps blurred into printed ones, creating an illusion bound to have your head spinning back around for a double take.

Ashley wore the dress with chunky silver earrings and deep royal-blue heels. She pulled her hair back into a high ponytail and gave her cheeks a bit of rosy blush. A couple of sunflowers in hand were the perfect finishing touch.

For the rest of the London press tour, Ashley wore vintage Thierry Mugler, Versace, and Jil Sander looks, as well as Issey Miyake and Marni pieces from the Fall 2026 season. It’s safe to say Grimshaw was in good company.

Rockets survive without Kevin Durant, dominate Lakers in Game 4 after Deandre Ayton's ejection to avoid sweep

The Houston Rockets aren’t done just yet.

Yahoo Sports

The Rockets, even without Kevin Durant available, picked up a solid 115-96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night in Game 4 of their opening-round playoff series. The win kept their postseason run alive after they dropped the first three games of the series.

While a 3-0 deficit is something that no team has successfully rallied back from — very few in that spot have even forced a Game 7 — the Rockets have officially avoided the series sweep. It’s a start.

The Rockets took control of the game in the first half, and even briefly took an 11-point lead late in the second quarter — which marked their largest lead of the series up until that point. The Lakers struggled to get their offense going, went just 1-of-6 from behind the arc and committed 13 turnovers in the first 12 minutes.

Deandre Ayton ejected in the third quarter

Deandre Ayton was perhaps the best part of the Lakers’ offense early on Sunday night.

So when he picked up the first ejection of his career midway through the third quarter, it marked a major blow to the Lakers’ chances.

Ayton was trying to stop Alperen Şengün from driving to the rim when his left elbow came up high and drilled Sengun right in his jaw. Sengun recoiled immediately, clearly shaken up by the hit.

Officials reviewed the incident and quickly determined that Ayton’s elbow was “unnecessary and excessive.” While it didn’t appear to be intentional by any means, Ayton was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and was thrown out of the game. He finished the night with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rockets were up by 19 points at the time. They ended up outscoring the Lakers 34-18 in the third period alone and took a 25-point lead into the fourth quarter. By that point, the Lakers were just about out of it. Houston powered through the rest of the way to grab the 19-point win easily.

Aaron Holiday and Adou Thiero got into a very small scuffle under the rim with a little more than a minute left, which earned them both quick ejections. Officials, however, got the dustup settled without much issue. The two teams met for a third scuffle after the final buzzer sounded, too, though not much came of it.

Amen Thompson led the Rockets with 23 points and seven assists after he went 10-of-16 from the field. Tari Eason added 20 points and eight rebounds, and Şengün finished with 19 points.

The Rockets were without Durant on Sunday night. He was ruled out of the game earlier in the day with a bone bruise in his sprained left ankle, which marked his third missed game of the series. He missed Game 3 due to the ankle injury, and he missed the opening game due to a knee injury. His status in Game 5 is still in doubt.

Rui Hachimura added 13 points to go with Ayton’s 19 for the Lakers. LeBron James had 10 points and nine assists, but also had eight of the Lakers’ 23 turnovers. They went just 5-of-20 from behind the arc, too, which marked their fewest made 3-pointers in a single game all season.

The Lakers also ruled out Austin Reaves due to an oblique strain. He’s missed the entire series so far, but has reportedly been close to making a return and was considered questionable entering Sunday’s contest. Luka Dončić is still out, too.

Reaves’ presence on Wednesday night in Game 5 would undoubtedly provide a significant boost for the Lakers as they attempt to close out the Rockets. While the Lakers are still in great position to make it out of the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2023, it’s going to take at least one more night to officially pull that off.
