At just 20 square miles, the archipelago of Bermuda seems like a tiny target for hurricanes over the vast Atlantic Ocean. Now imagine seeing impacts from two different hurricanes in the span of 2 to 3 days.

This week alone, Bermuda will be dodging tropical activity once again, with Humberto passing to the west and north of the island Tuesday and Imelda passing even closer on Thursday.

Right now, Imelda is under a tropical storm watch for Humberto, but that could change to a hurricane watch later today for Imelda. Confusing?

It's definitely unusual. Let's break it down for you.

First Up: Humberto

Major Hurricane Humberto is forecast to weaken slightly as it passes by Bermuda, but could still produce tropical storm force winds across the archipelago Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning. Along with gusty winds and bands of rain, dangerous high surf generated by Humberto will impact the island.

There will be a small window of quiet before Imelda comes barreling in right on Humberto's heels.

Next Storm: Imelda

Imelda is forecast to pass Bermuda much closer than Humberto as potentially a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.

Regardless, the storm will bring gusty winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous marine conditions to the island.

As the forecast gets a little more certain in the coming days, we will have a better idea of how close Imelda will come to Bermuda. The closer the storm is to the island, the more severe the impacts will be.

While Bermuda is built to withstand the powers of mother nature, this rather unusual occurrence will have Bermuda's residents and tourists on high alert this week.

Bermuda Has Been Hit Back-To-Back Before

Bermuda experienced an unprecedented double whammy in 2014, as two named storms made landfall there just six days apart: Hurricane Fay on Oct. 12, followed by Hurricane Gonzalo on Oct. 18.

The island had never been affected by two named storms so close together in time, let alone seen both of them make landfall on the tiny cluster of islands.

Fay was unexpectedly damaging, knocking out power to the vast majority of Bermuda's residents. Cleanup had to be expedited as Gonzalo quickly followed; Gonzalo was Bermuda's strongest and most damaging hurricane since Fabian in 2003. Gonzalo left behind an estimated $200 million to $400 million in damage.

Before striking Bermuda, Gonzalo peaked as a Category 4 hurricane.

How Often Is Bermuda Hit?

However, Bermuda tends to be in the crosshairs of tropical activity quite often. On average, Bermuda is within 110 nautical miles of a tropical system once a season. They average a "damaging storm" once every six to seven years, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.

Humberto In 2019 Also Impacted Bermuda

The last time Humberto was on the Atlantic Hurricane list was in 2019. That year Humberto also impacted Bermuda as a dangerous Category 3 storm. The island missed a direct hit by less than 65 miles, and caused extensive damage.

The storm knocked down numerous trees and power lines, which left roughly 80% of the island without power.

Humberto in 2019 caused an estimated $25 million in damages.
