Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a question-and-answer session with students at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon. The incident quickly became the lead story on every cable news channel, and during MSNBC's coverage, political analyst Matthew Dowd made some comments that have now led to him being fired by the network, according to Variety.

"Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions … that's the unfortunate environment we're in."

During Katy Tur Reports, Dowd said, "We don't know any of the full details of this yet. We don't know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration or — so we have no idea about this…He's been one of the most divisive — especially divisive younger figures in this — who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions and I think that's the environment we're in. You can't stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place and that's the unfortunate environment we're in."

Dowd later apologized, writing on BlueSky, "My thoughts & prayers are w/ the family and friends of Charlie Kirk. On an earlier appearance on MSNBC, I was asked a question on the environment we are in. I apologize for my tone and words. Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack. Let us all come together and condemn violence of any kind."

"Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he."

MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler also apologized for Dowd's comments, saying in a statement, "During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise."

Kirk, 31, is survived by his wife of four years, Erika Frantzve Kirk, and two young children — a daughter, 3, and a son, 1. The couple kept their children's names and faces off of social media.

In the wake of Kirk's death, legendary singer Pat Boone also shared a moving tribute. Read his heartfelt message here.
