LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey didn't take questions from reporters after her team's exhibition win over Langston on Thursday night.

Associate head coach Bob Starkey instead attended the postgame news conference that came just after LSU made the firing of athletic director Scott Woodward official. Starkey said that news of Woodward's firing had made its way to the LSU bench during the game and when asked why Mulkey wasn't in attendance, Starkey didn't mince words. He also didn't use many, either.

"Yeah, she's heartbroken," Starkey said.

Woodward, who came back to his alma mater in 2019 to replace Joe Alleva, hired Mulkey away from Baylor in 2021 and the Tigers won the 2023 national title. Starkey, a longtime LSU assistant for both the men's and women's basketball teams, is in his second stint with the school and spoke highly of Woodward during the news conference.

He also said that the team had been having conversations about the turmoil within the LSU athletic department in recent days. LSU and Woodward officially parted ways a day after Gov. Jeff Landry said that Woodward would not be hiring the team's next football coach. Brian Kelly was fired on Sunday after the Tigers dropped to 5-3 with a loss to Texas A&M.

Discussions to fire Kelly took place at the governor's mansion in Baton Rouge and Woodward was sidelined for those talks, according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger.

"Coach Mulkey is incredible at steering teams through situations on and off the court, social issues, athletic issues, just anything that we go through, she's a truth speaker and she's not afraid of confrontation or talking to kids about things," Starkey said. "So we've had some conversations. It's difficult. Our student-athletes know student-athletes on the football team, our coaches know coaches on the football team.

"I think it's one of the things that gets overshadowed, that these are people and human beings that are going through these situations and they have families and all this gives us pause. If you've been in it long enough, you've gone through it yourself. I've had to go through it."

With Woodward now out, LSU currently does not have a president, athletic director or football coach. The school's Board of Supervisors narrowed its presidential search down to three candidates earlier in the week.

It's unclear whether a search for a permanent athletic director will happen before or after the football search and before or after a president is named. Longtime assistant AD Verge Ausberry has been named the interim athletic director and the school said Thursday night that Ausberry would be in charge of the search for a new football coach.
