Prince William is opening up about how his bond with his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, evolved over time.
In his recent appearance on The Reluctant Traveler on Apple TV, the Prince of Wales, 43, spoke candidly about his connection to the late monarch and her husband, revealing that their relationship grew closer as the years went on.
"Yes, I had a good relationship," William said when asked by host Eugene Levy if he was close to his grandparents. "My grandparents were of a different generation. I think when we were younger, it was harder to have that very close relationship because it was quite formal, but as they got older and I got older, it got warmer and warmer."
He added, "I definitely think my relationship was best with my grandparents when they were more in their, sort of 80s — when they'd sort of, relaxed a little bit."

William's rare reflection offers a rare glimpse into his personal memories of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, who were married for 73 years until Philip's death in 2021 and the Queen's death the following year.
As a young prince growing up in the spotlight, William often experienced the formality of royal life firsthand — something he has acknowledged feeling differently about as he's gotten older.

"I don't feel too overwhelmed by that," he told Levy of his future role as monarch. "Not now anyway, when I was younger, yeah, there are bits that overwhelm you, a bit like, 'Wow, are we actually doing this? Is this sort of happening?" But with time and age, I think you feel a bit more settled in that side of things, and you go, actually, I can do that. And even if a few curve balls come in, that doesn't necessarily overwhelm me."
William was often seen alongside his grandparents during key family moments and royal events, from Trooping the Colour appearances on the Buckingham Palace balcony to private holidays in Scotland at Balmoral — later joined by Kate Middleton and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who were also known to enjoy time with "Gan-Gan" and "Great-Grandpa."

When Prince Philip died at age 99, William paid tribute to his grandfather's legacy and quiet strength, describing him as "an extraordinary man" whose "humor and charm could light up any room."
After Queen Elizabeth's death the following year, William called her "an extraordinary leader" and "a guiding light" for the family, writing, "I will honor her memory by supporting my father, The King, in every way I can."
