Lauren Jauregui's relationship to social media is evolving.

While she used to post prolifically on various platforms, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter's held back as of late and now feels differently about what she wants to share online versus what she'd like to put in her music.

Some of Jauregui's inner thoughts are present in the lyrics of her reflective new single "Ego," the first offering from her upcoming album, where listeners will get even more insight into her psyche.

"I think my long-time fans know me, and I feel like this just is the next chapter of me — what I've been internally moving through especially," Jauregui tells PEOPLE. "I feel like I've been AWOL on socials, to be honest. I went through a dark night of the soul, and that's a very jarring experience that makes being perceived, especially misconstrued, really painful."

The Fifth Harmony member explains, "I was just like, 'What are we even doing social media for?' Then, I woke up, and I was like, 'Because the kids are on social media, that's where everybody's at. That's where everybody's talking. That's where everybody's connecting.' I've been in that fluctuation."

However, fans shouldn't worry about losing contact with Jauregui as she takes some distance from social media. "I think now, the fans can just expect me to be more present and having something to say that's more direct and intentional than just all my thoughts on [X]," says the star, who also has her own app to connect with supporters.

Beyond any platform, the "Lento" artist wants to focus on sparking connection and having conversations through her music. "I really do sincerely believe art has always been the saving grace in dark times, the thing that illuminates and brings about knowledge and the ability to connect with one another even if we're different," she says.

"It's about me connecting with myself, but in such a way that I hope can be relatable to other people who are going through the same ego death that I'm going through right now," explains Jauregui.
