WASHINGTON - A group of protesters confronted President Donald Trump at a local restaurant in D.C., chanting "free Palestine" and calling Trump the "Hitler of our time."

The incident occurred after Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio entered Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab, a couple of blocks from the White House, the evening of Sept. 9.

Trump had told reporters that he was eating out to showcase how much safer D.C. has become since his federal crackdown on crime.

But Trump came face to face with activists from the grassroots group Code Pink, according to a video clip shared on X. The activists were shouting, "Free D.C., free Palestine, Trump is the Hitler of our time."

Trump stood in front of the protesters, smiling for a bit, before signaling security to escort the activists out of the restaurant. As they were being led out, they claimed Trump was "terrorizing Gaza and communities all over the world."

Trump deployed National Guard troops to crack down on crime in D.C. last month, following an Aug. 3 assault on a former staffer of the Department of Government Efficiency that occurred during an attempted carjacking. Trump also ordered the federal government to seize control of Washington's Metropolitan Police Department.

"We're taking our capital back," Trump said August 11. "We're taking it back."

Washington's crime rate is down this year compared to 2024. Violent crimes are 26% lower than last year. Homicides are down 12%, according to statistics compiled by the Metropolitian Police Department.

Trump told reporters on Sept. 2 that D.C. has no crime. "You can go and actually walk with your children, your wife, your husband, you can walk right down the middle of the street. You're not going to be shot," he said.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that Trump and his team "enjoyed crab, shrimp, salad, steak, and dessert" at the restaurant.
