WASHINGTON − President Donald Trump reacted to Russian's drone incursion into Poland's airspace with a brief statement that raised eyebrows as Poland's leaders and other western allies condemned the action.

"What's with Russia violating Poland's airspace with drones? Here we go!" Trump said, without elaborating, in a Sept. 10 post on his social media platform Truth Social.

Poland's military said earlier it shot down Russian drones that violated its airspace during a Russian air attack on Ukraine, marking the first time a NATO member directly engaged with Russian military assets in their own airspace since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the EU member had invoked NATO's Article 4 for urgent talks after Russian drones violated its airspace. The Kremlin declined to comment on a drone incursion into Poland, after the NATO member said it had downed several Russian drones overnight, accusing Moscow of violating its airspace during an attack on Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told his parliament it was "the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two," though he also said he had "no reason to believe we're on the brink of war."

In a statement, Poland's armed forces said Russia's actions posed a "real threat" to Polish citizens. Poland closed at least four airports, including Chopin Airport in Warsaw. They have since reopened.

Moscow denied responsibility for the incident, with a senior diplomat in Poland saying the drones had come from the direction of Ukraine. Neither Poland nor NATO has yet given a full account of what they suspect the drones were doing.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the "barbaric attack on Ukraine and the egregious and unprecedented violation of Polish and NATO airspace by Russian drones is deeply concerning."

The development in Poland comes after Trump's Aug. 15 summit with Putin in Alaska failed to result in a second meeting between Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to pursue an end to the Russia-Ukraine war as Trump hoped. Trump on Sept. 8 told reporters he plans to "soon" speak to Putin aiming to end the war.

President Donald Trump hosts Polish President Karol Nawrocki (L) in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC on September 3, 2025.

Trump has repeatedly threatened sanctions and other stiff penalties on Russia but has withheld doing so, though he did double tariffs on imports from India as a penalty for India importing oil from Russia.

Later on Sept. 10, according to Reuters, Trump plans to speak with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a conservative nationalist and political ally whom Trump hosted at the White House last week.
