September has arrived with the news that the National Hurricane Center is watching a new tropical depression a little over 100 miles off the southwest coast of Mexico, and a westward moving tropical wave far out in the Atlantic Ocean shows increasing chances of becoming a tropical cyclone.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kiko, further west off Mexico's coast, strengthened to Hurricane Kiko in the Pacific.

Tropical storm watches possible in Mexico

The most immediate concern is Tropical Depression Twelve-E that formed on Sept. 1 and the next day was about 190 miles south-southwest of Manzanilla, Mexico. The storm had winds of 35 mph and is forecast to become a tropical storm later on Sept. 2. The next name up in rotation for tropical storms in the Pacific is Lorena.

"Interests in southwestern Mexico and Baja California Sur should monitor the progress of this system," the hurricane center said in an advisory early Sept. 2. "A Tropical Storm Watch could be required for portions of Baja California Sur later today or on Wednesday."

A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours,

Tropical Depression Twelve E formed about 145 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico overnight and is forecast to become a tropical storm later on Sept. 2, 2025.

The storm is forecast to gain wind speeds just below hurricane strength by Sept. 3, according to the center's official forecast. Before turning inland over the Baja California peninsula on Sept. 5, the storm is forecast to encounter cooler water temperatures and more stable air and experience a gradual weakening, stated a forecast discussion written by Richard Pasch, a senior hurricane specialist at the center.

Heavy rainfall to the east and northeast of the storm may occur in portions of northwestern Mexico, from the states of Colima to Sinaloa, the hurricane center said, with flash flooding possible, especially in areas of mountainous terrain. Rain is forecast to begin arriving along Baja California Sur on Wednesday and continue through Friday, bringing 4 to 8 inches of rain, with greater amounts possible in isolated locations.

Could another Atlantic storm form?

The tropical wave in the Atlantic, now south of the Cabo Verde Islands, is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, but environmental conditions continue to be favorable for a tropical depression to form later in the week as it moves across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic, the hurricane center said.

The next name up for the seventh storm of the Atlantic hurricane region is Gabrielle.

A tropical wave moving westward across the Atlantic could become a tropical storm later in the week of Sept. 1, the National Hurricane Center said. What else is in the Pacific?

Kiko, about 1,840 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, was forecast to strengthen and become a hurricane with peak winds as high as 110 mph. The hurricane center saw no indication of a threat to land.

Tropical Storm Kiko is expected to become a hurricane on Sept. 2, 2025 as it moves westward in the Pacific Ocean.
