Cillian Murphy said that he "doesn't know anything about" playing Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter series.
Murphy said it would be "really hard to follow" Ralph Fiennes' performance as the dark lord in the original Potter movies.
The actor also said that it was "quite emotional" to participate in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which also stars Fiennes.
Cillian Murphy says he is not He Who Must Not Be Named in the new Harry Potter series.
The Oppenheimer star responded to rumors that he might portray Lord Voldemort in HBO's adaptation of J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz.
"No. No. Genuinely — I mean, my kids show me occasionally, but I don't know anything about that," Murphy said when asked if the casting rumors had any truth. "Also, it's just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend. So good luck to whoever is going to fill those shoes."

Horowitz also joked that Murphy would have to lose his "beautiful nose" since Fiennes' take on the character only had snakelike slits for nostrils.
"I'm very attached to it!" Murphy responded.
Production is currently underway on the first season of HBO's Harry Potter, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone over the course of eight episodes. Voldemort only appears in Rowling's novel as a grotesque face growing out of another character's head in that first book, and doesn't receive a full-bodied corporeal form until the climax of the fourth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
With all of that in mind, it's likely that we won't get a full look at Voldemort until season 4 of the series (as each season will tackle one book), and HBO may opt to delay hiring an actor to play the dark lord until that point.
Fiennes, who will appear alongside Murphy in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple next year, previously said that he approves of the Sunshine actor taking over as the evil wizard. "Cillian is a fantastic actor," the Conclave star said on Watch What Happens Live last year. "I actually think that's a wonderful, wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian."

However, Fiennes also said that he was open to returning as the character himself in 2022. "Sure, of course," he told Variety. "No question about it."
The door might be open for Fiennes to reprise his role, as the show recently confirmed that Warwick Davis will play Professor Flitwick on the series after previously playing the same character throughout the film franchise.

Elsewhere in the Happy Sad Confused interview, Murphy teased his brief role in The Bone Temple and discussed The Marvels filmmaker Nia DaCosta taking over the directorial reins from franchise architect Danny Boyle.
"This is Nia's movie," he said. "Danny produced it, but she was amazing. I mean, I was only on it for a brief period, but yeah, it was quite emotional to go back and to think how bloody long ago [the original 28 Days Later] was."
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hits theaters on Jan. 16, 2026. Harry Potter is expected to premiere on HBO in 2027.
