America's Forever stamp has another new face.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, on what would have been the late president's 101st birthday, the United States Postal Service released a new stamp to honor former President Jimmy Carter. Carter died last December in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

The dedication ceremony took place at The Carter Center in Atlanta, the USPS said in a statement.

Here's what to know about the new stamp commemorating the former president.

Stamp celebrates 'life and legacy'

"Our family is excited to attend the first-day-of-issue ceremony to celebrate the life and legacy of my grandfather," Jason Carter, chair of The Carter Center, said in the statement. "My grandparents would be touched by this incredible honor."

The 39th president of the United States, Carter "guided the nation through an energy crisis, economic struggles and international tensions," the USPS said.

His administration's accomplishments include the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, and the establishment of diplomatic relations with China.

Announced Aug. 16, the stamp was designed by USPS art director Ethel Kessler, the USPS said, and features a 1982 oil-on-linen painting by Herbert Abrams, "who used it to prepare for Carter's official White House portrait."
