Former Michigan QB Alex Orji's first season at UNLV is over after just three games because of a nasty left leg injury.
Orji left Saturday's win over UCLA after he got hit while running toward the sideline. On Monday, UNLV coach Dan Mullen said that Orji had suffered a grade 3 LCL sprain and had suffered a hamstring injury that was so significant that his hamstring detached from his femur.
"He's got to be one of the toughest guys I know, he jogged off the field," Mullen said at his weekly news conference. "Then when they did the MRI they got in there and saw the extent of the injury. From what we originally thought, thought it was going to be worse, got over to the sideline, evaluated everything 'OK it's not as bad as we think' then the MRI was the worst-case scenario and it ended up being the worst-case scenario with the hamstring injury."
Orji transferred from Michigan to UNLV after the 2024 season. He was the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Virginia transfer Anthony Colandrea and had attempted three passes and rushed 10 times for 42 yards and a TD.
"The devastating part to me is not just the loss of his talent on the field but his leadership, his demeanor, the man that he is, it's heartbreaking for him for all the work he puts in. That's the biggest heartbreak. And also for the team, I know he puts in so much for everybody on this team."
Orji played in 20 games in his Michigan career and was the team's starter for three games in 2024 as the Wolverines looked for consistent quarterback play. With five-star freshman Bryce Underwood signing with the team ahead of the 2025 season, Orji transferred after the 2024 regular season and joined Mullen in Las Vegas as the former Florida coach was hired to replace Barry Odom.
