The Garnet Fire burning in the Sierra National Forest has grown to more than 85 square miles and is just 14% contained, officials confirmed Monday.
Several spot fires have emerged near roads where power lines cross, and firefighters remain on high alert.
The blaze, sparked by lightning on Aug. 24, had been relatively quiet until now, giving crews a crucial window to strengthen containment lines before conditions shifted Sunday into Monday. In just 24 hours, the fire grew by more than 10,000 acres.

New evacuation orders have been issued for communities to the north and west of the fire.
As the fire pushes outward, heavy timber and scores of bug-killed trees are creating additional difficulties for firefighters. Additionally, fire crews say dozens of giant sequoias are less than 3 miles from the fire, and efforts are underway to protect them, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Crews say they anticipated this latest growth and are creating contingencies while actively fighting the blaze. As flames move farther toward the north and northwestern edges, incident management has shifted resources to meet the threat.
Containment efforts have included building defensive lines using hand crews, machinery and covering nearby vegetation with retardant. Strategic firing has also been deployed. Fire officials say the tactics have been "very successful" so far.
Aerial resources, including helicopters and air tankers, are also supporting suppression efforts.
Authorities warn that with weather shifts and terrain challenges ahead, the fire will likely remain a significant threat to the surrounding areas.
