The third NBA Cup is underway. The first two iterations of the in-season tournament offered mixed results from a ratings perspective, but the event's piped in some intrigue before the All-Star break.

The entertainment continues this year on Halloween during the NBA's opening month, which is brimming with storylines, including Victor Wembanyama's triumphant San Antonio Spurs return, Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves taking turns in the Los Angeles Lakers' spotlight with LeBron James sidelined, and the Oklahoma City Thunder starting their title defense with back-to-back, double-overtime victories.

The Emirates NBA Cup is played every Friday until Nov. 28. The week of Thanksgiving will feature additional group-play games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The quarterfinals will be played from Dec. 9-10. Then the semifinals and championship will be held on Dec. 13 and Dec. 16, respectively.

For more information about the Cup and how it works, head on over here. You can check out all 30 court designs for Cup play here.

NBA Cup 2025: Schedule, format and new courts for this year's in-season tournament

Yahoo Sports is rounding up the action from the first night of Cup competition below:

Celtics 109, Sixers 108

The Boston Celtics led by as many as 24 points in the first half, which the Philadelphia 76ers ultimately ended on a 17-4 run. Momentum started to swing when rookie guard VJ Edgecombe followed up a 3 with a transition and-1. Edgecombe finished with 17 points. His backcourt partner, Tyrese Maxey, clocked out with 26. Joel Embiid posted 20 points and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes. And the Sixers nearly pulled off their fourth fourth-quarter comeback of the season. They had two chances at game-winning buckets in the final five seconds. Neither came to fruition, and Boston avenged its one-point, season-opening defeat to its division rival with a nail-biting, one-point win. The Celtics, who were led by Jaylen Brown's 32 points Friday, have now won three in a row after starting the season 0-3.

Hawks 128, Pacers 108

No Trae Young, no problem for the Atlanta Hawks — at least, that was the case Friday. In their first game since Young's knee injury, the Hawks saw all five of their starters score in double figures. Jalen Johnson punctuated his 22-point performance with a one-handed jam in the final stages of Atlanta's road victory. Nickeil Alexander-Walker had his best game in a Hawks uniform so far, pitching in 21 points of his own. Atlanta created serious separation in the third quarter, during which it outscored the Indiana Pacers 34-17. A season removed from making a run to the NBA Finals, Indiana is suddenly staring at an 0-5 record. The absence of Tyrese Haliburton is felt, especially on a night like Friday when even fellow multi-time All-Star Pascal Siakam is struggling from the field. He shot just 5-of-15 and finished with 18 points in the loss.

Raptors 112, Cavaliers 101

It was one of those nights for Jamison Battle. Now in his second year out of Ohio State, the smooth-shooting lefty delivered six triples off the bench to the tune of 20 points. He was one of three Toronto Raptors players who hit that mark, joining Brandon Ingram and RJ Barrett. Two days after connecting on only 40.2% of their attempts from the floor against the Celtics, the Cleveland Cavaliers logged just a 40% field goal percentage versus the Raptors. This time, Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen weren't in the lineup. Toronto erased a 10-point deficit in the third quarter and then finished strong in the fourth. Cleveland is 3-3. It didn't have three losses last season until Nov. 29.

Bulls 135, Knicks 125

The Chicago Bulls are still undefeated. They nearly got a triple-double from Josh Giddey, who finished with a career-high 32 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists in a 10-point victory over the New York Knicks. A 35-year-old Nikola Vučević turned in 26 points and seven rebounds. Ayo Dosunmu made eight of his 10 shots off the bench, collecting 22 points. The Bulls were 10-of-21 from 3 in the first half and 17-of-37 from deep on the night. New York enjoyed success from long range, too, and the Knicks got a combined 100 points from Jalen Brunson (29), OG Anunoby (26), Mikal Bridges (23) and Karl-Anthony Towns (22). But they gave up 25 off their 12 turnovers and were outscored in the paint 54-38. Chicago is 5-0 for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

Sally Struthers is revealing how starring in Gilmore Girls, known for its fast dialogue, affected her as an actress.

In an October 2025 interview with The New York Post, Struthers spoke about her role as Stars Hollow resident, Babette Dell, during the show's original seven-season run and its 2016 four-episode Netflix reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. She explained that after Gilmore Girls ended in 2007, she took to the stage to portray Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. However, the director didn't love that she was rushing through her dialogue for the production in Maine. When her director said he was perplexed by how fast she was speaking, Struthers didn't initially know what he was talking about.

She said that she soon realized that she was used to talking quickly because of her tenure on Gilmore Girls. She let the director know that the show's creator,Amy Sherman-Palladino, required the cast to get their lines out quickly because she "writes the script for a one hour television show that's about 8 to 9 pages longer than all other one hour television shows." In addition, Struthers said that Sherman-Palladino's "writing is so brilliant, she doesn't want to cut any of the words."

According to the All in the Family star, she promised the director that she would "slow down" and "play Golde at a normal speaking pace," despite "speaking really fast" during the seven-year production of Gilmore Girls.

Lauren Graham Discussed the Specific Style of the 'Gilmore Girls' Dialogue

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in October 2025 for Gilmore Girls' 25th anniversary, Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai Gilmore, shared her thoughts about the show's dialogue. The actress said she believes "the writing on this show is like music."

"You wouldn't sing a ballad super speedy and you wouldn't sing a pop song super slowly," said Graham, who starred as Lorelai in both Gilmore Girls and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

She also told The Hollywood Reporter she was used to the dialogue because she "did a fair amount of theater and the language [of Gilmore Girls] has a theatrical quality."

"[Y]ou can feel it, you can hear it when you miss a word or when something's out of step, because, even though it's this bubbly stream of consciousness, it's written with an incredible amount of precision. I think it just spoke to what I gravitated towards already," said Graham to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the same Hollywood Reporter interview, Sherman-Palladino said she always intended the show to have a "very fast" pace.

"When a page is a minute a page, by the time Gilmore Girls really got up to speed and in its true form, we were less than 30 seconds a page. We needed twice as many pages to get the same amount of product — but at the time that I did the pilot, nobody believed me," said Sherman-Palladino to the publication.

Leslie Jones kept calling Pedro Pascal the wrong name at SNL50

Leslie Jones had a comically bad time learning Pedro Pascal's name.

The former Saturday Night Live cast member, who was part of the big SNL50 anniversary special in February, recalls meeting the Last of Us actor as one of her favorite moments from the experience. If only she could have remembered his name when they met.

The special as a whole was "everything," she said.

"And Pedro, is it Pedro?" she asked on Vulture's Good One podcast, still struggling with his name. "Let me tell you, [I] called him Pablo until he told me his name is Pedro. So, I was like, 'Pablo, Pablo.' And he was like, 'Pedro.' And I was like, 'Pablo.' He's like, 'Pedro.' And I was like, 'Who the f— is Pedro?' And he was like, 'That's my name.'"

That finally convinced her.

"I was like, 'Oh, okay. I'll call you Pedro. Even though Pablo's better,'" she said before laughing.

"He's so cute, too," the comedian added.

Jones, who was a regular on the NBC sketch series from 2014 to 2019, was one of the dozens of former cast members who descended on Studio 8H for the epic evening. She took part in a "Black Jeopardy" sketch along with fellow alums Eddie Murphy, Tracy Morgan, and Chris Rock, and longtime cast member Kenan Thompson.

Pascal, who hosted the sketch show in 2023, was one of the many celebrities who were part of the night's list of non-cast performers, which also included the likes of Scarlett Johansson, who happens to be the wife of "Weekend Update" cohost Colin Jost, and 10-time host Tom Hanks.

Pascal joined the fun as part of the "Domingo: Vow Renewal" sketch, featuring Marcello Hernández's recurring character. Pascal and Bad Bunny played the lothario's hot brothers. Sabrina Carpenter and SNL alums Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Andy Samberg, Martin Short, and Molly Shannon were also part of the sketch alongside several current cast members.

"I was the first record scratch of the night by missing my cues like three times in a row," the Mandalorian star scolded himself about coming in at the wrong time.

"I remember thinking, 'F---! I f---ed it up!'" Pascal said. "I was really, really upset with myself for missing the cues. I feel like there was a cognitive and auditory failure on my part where I was so nervous I really couldn't hear what was happening or what the cue was. I guess no matter what kind of singing and how bad or funny it's supposed to be, I have just sheer terror of having to sing in any kind of capacity."

Let's just blame that one on Pablo.

Olivia Munn has the cutest little banh bao on the menu!

In honor of Halloween 2025, the actress, whose mother is from Vietnam, celebrated her culture and the annual holiday with her baby girl.

"OMG, THE CUTEST MOST DELICIOUS DUMPLING, like ever," Munn captioned a Friday, Oct. 31 Instagram carousel of herself and her daughter Méi.

The Your Friends & Neighbors star, 45, began the photo roundup with a picture of Méi sitting in a bamboo dumpling steamer on a kitchen counter. She was dressed in an off-white bodysuit and hat made to mimic the steamed buns filled with savory fillings.

Sitting beside her was a bottle of soy sauce, a pair of chopsticks and bowls.

Munn, who also shares son Malcolm, 2, with husband John Mulaney, appeared in the third slide, smiling as she stood beside her little "banh bao" and holding onto the chopsticks.

She ended her post with a picture of her holding Méi, who was born on Sept. 14, 2024.

"Bun Bao for Halloween! 包子 🥟," the X-Men: Apocalypse actress captioned a video version of the yummy costume.

Halloween 2025 isn't the first time Munn has integrated her Vietnamese roots into the festive holiday.

Last year, she dressed Méi as a DIY "Omakase for Halloween."

Munn's video showed her documenting the step-by-step process of turning her baby into different pieces of sushi, dressing her daughter in salmon, tuna and egg-colored onesies.

She used a round, white pillow to act as "rice" and added a "seaweed" blanket.

"This is such an easy way to make beautiful sushi at home," a voice said in the background of the video.

In 2022, baby Malcolm went as Munn's mother for Halloween — complete with a wig in a super similar style to his grandmother's hair.

"Happy Halloween!! Here is Malcolm dressed as my mom," the actress confirmed in a social media post at the time.

She also included a photo of her mother Kimberly sitting in a chair, wearing a gray shirt and surrounded by snacks as a point of reference for the inspiration for Malcolm's look.

Just one month after he was born on Nov. 24, 2021, Munn shared an Instagram Stories post of Mulaney, 43, holding the infant inside of a large pot on a kitchen counter.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bo Horvat scored with 15:31 remaining in the third period to lift the New York Islanders to a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Friday night.

Alex Ovechkin remained one goal shy of 900 for the Capitals, who have lost three straight. Tom Wilson scored his sixth goal of the season for Washington in the second, but Jean-Gabriel Pageau answered with a short-handed tally later that period.

Horvat took a pass from Emil Heineman on a 2-on-1 break and beat Logan Thompson for the game-winner. Mathew Barzal scored into an empty net to make it 3-1.

Ovechkin scored his record-breaking 895th goal against the Islanders on April 6, but Ilya Sorokin — the goalie who allowed it — wouldn't yield to another milestone on this night. He made 13 saves in the first period as Washington made an early push, and only Wilson managed to beat him.

Pageau, who failed to get a shot off on a first-period breakaway, got inside of Ovechkin and redirected Simon Holmstrom's pass past Thompson for his third goal this season. Washington challenged unsuccessfully for offside.

The Capitals, who were already without forward Dylan Strome, lost Pierre-Luc Dubois late in the first period to a lower-body injury.

Barzal returned for the Islanders after being scratched in the previous night's loss at Carolina for tardiness.

Ovechkin has two goals in 11 games this season, and Washington's power play struggled again Friday, going 0 for 4. The Caps are 6 for 36 with the man advantage on the season.

The Islanders have three short-handed goals, tied for the NHL lead.

Up next

Islanders: Host Columbus on Sunday.

Capitals: At Buffalo on Saturday night.
