LE MANS, France (AP) — Tennis star Novak Djokovic is part of a group of investors who have bought a stake in French second-tier soccer team Le Mans, along with ex-Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen, the club said Friday.

Le Mans said in a statement that they join other new financial investors into the club, including Latin American sports investment firm OutField and Georgios Frangulis, the founder and chief executive of OakBerry. Frangulis is the boyfriend of three-time women's Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka.

"The uniqueness of this fund also lies in its contribution from high-level athletes," Le Mans president Thierry Gomez said in the statement. "Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa, and Kevin Magnussen will be part of the adventure."

No financial details were given.

Djokovic is the owner of a men's record 24 Grand Slam titles in tennis.

The 38-year-old Serb has won 100 career titles overall.

Massa won 11 races and secured 41 podiums in his F1 career. When driving for Ferrari, the popular Brazilian was within a whisker of winning the 2008 title, only for Lewis Hamilton to beat him in a dramatic finish at the last race. Hamilton won the title by 98 points to 97.

The 32-year-old Magnussen drove close to 200 races in F1, securing one podium and one pole position. But the Danish driver was not retained by Haas at the end of last year when his contract expired.

Le Mans soccer club, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, begins its league campaign on Aug. 9.

Le Mans — a small city in northwestern France — also hosts the famed 24-hour endurance car race. ___

Japan's Miyu Yamashita and Rio Takeda pull away from the field at Women's British Open

-

 • Japan's Miyu Yamashita and Rio Takeda pull away from the field at Women's British Open

August 1, 2025 at 3:08 PM

PORTHCAWL, Wales (AP) — Miyu Yamashita started and finished with short birdie putts and was flawless in between as she posted a 7-under 65 on Friday to build a three-shot lead over Rio Takeda going into the weekend of the Women's British Open.

The Japanese players, both among the top 15 in the women's world ranking, played in the same group at Royal Porthcawl and put on a show in the second round, matching great shots and big putts that left the rest of the field far behind.

Takeda was the only player within seven shots of Yamashita. Nelly Korda (72) and rising English star Lottie Woad (70) were among the top 10 on the leaderboard and still nine shots behind at the halfway point.

Woad was on the cusp of contention until a triple bogey on the par-4 16th.

"There was a lot more good in it than bad," Woad said. "Played really well for 17 holes, just that one hole cost me a bit."

Yamashita was bogey-free and did most of her damage with four birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn as she took advantage of an early start before stronger wind arrived.

"I didn't make any particular adjustments to my swing, but the wind was strong, so I think shots are important, as well as club selection and the direction I aim at the target," Yamashita said. "So things like that are important, so I played while keeping in mind the image I've been practicing so far."

Takeda, whose two LPGA Tour titles include the Toto Japan Classic last year before she was a member, was slowed by a pair of bogeys. Takeda atoned for that with a superb approach into the par-5 ninth that settled within tap-in range for eagle. She shot 69.

"I was able to play calmly today, and I hope to focus on my game and play calmly again tomorrow," Takeda said.

Yamashita, who celebrates her 24th birthday on Saturday, was at 11-under 133.

Chiara Tamburlini of Switzerland and Pajaree Anannarukarn of Thailand each shot 69 and were tied for third at 4-under 140, along with American Lindy Duncan (70) and Laura Fuenfstueck of Germany, who had a 71.

The cut was at 2-over 146. Brooke Henderson of Canada was right on the cut line until missing a 4-foot par putt on the windblown 17th, and then failing to make birdie on the par-5 closing hole. Also missing the cut were world No. 4 Ruoning Yin (77), Rose Zhang (76) and U.S. Women's Open champion Maja Stark (78).

Yani Tseng of Taiwan, a two-time Women's British Open champion and former No. 1 player in the world, shot 73 and made the cut in a major for the first time in eight years. It was her first made cut in an LPGA event since the Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship in 2018.

Korda remains the No. 1 player in women's golf despite not winning this year, and she now faces a tall order with a nine-shot deficit for the last 36 holes.

"Honestly didn't really capitalize on anything in the calmer conditions on the front nine, then kind of got really windy on the back," Korda said. "Made a few more mistakes but bounced back with some birdies. Overall, I'm not going to complain with even par."

Woad made the best run at the Japanese duo until one swing and one nasty lie cost her. She had a 3-wood for her second shot into a strong wind on the par-4 16th. It sailed to the right into thick grass. Her first hack moved the golf ball only a few inches. She had to take a penalty shot for an unplayable lie, got that one on the green and two-putted for a triple bogey.

She closed with two pars for a 70, a score that otherwise would seem satisfactory.

"I'd certainly take it now, but not when I was standing on the 16th tee," Woad said with a smile. "Yeah, just got to try to play well over the weekend. It's pretty packed, so I can move up a bit."

Everyone is chasing Yamashita, who led the Japan LPGA money list in 2022 and 2023 while winning five times in each of those seasons. She also finished one shot out of a playoff for the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics last year.

For now, she is thinking only about keeping her rhythm in the wind.

"I haven't particularly worried about expected scores until now. I'm always thinking about competing for a high ranking in each tournament, and I just played with my day in mind," Yamashita said. "So I'm glad that my score and ranking worked out."

ESPN obtains RedZone, other media assets from NFL in blockbuster deal, per report

-

 • ESPN obtains RedZone, other media assets from NFL in blockbuster deal, per report

Scooby Axson, USA TODAY August 1, 2025 at 2:30 PM

In one of the biggest media deals this century, ESPN and the National Football League agreed to a deal that will send popular entities such as RedZone over to the network, according to The Athletic.

The deal, according to the report, could be worth billions and is expected to be formally announced next week.

ESPN is gearing to start its direct-to-consumer service within weeks, which consumers are expected to pay nearly $30 a month, allowing buyers to cut cable subscriptions even further as people have more choices than ever in how they consume content featuring the nation's most popular and attended spectator sport.

The network is expected to absorb the aforementioned RedZone, NFL Network, headquartered in Inglewood, California, and to take on its slate of games this season as well as the league's popular fantasy football franchises. It is not expected that NFL Films is part of the deal, but the league is likely to take a 10% stake in the majority Disney-owned ESPN. The league is currently in an 11-year, $111 billion media rights deal with Amazon, CBS, ESPN, Fox, and NBC, which is set to expire in 2033.

The deal still needs to be approved by government regulators, but is expected to be done in plenty of time for the network to gear up for its Super Bowl 61 coverage. The game is set for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The game is to be aired by ABC, another Disney-owned property.

 • Pamela Anderson celebrates 'Naked Gun' release with Liam Neeson in sweet new photos

Jay Stahl, USA TODAYAugust 2, 2025 at 2:21 AM

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson have never looked closer.

The "Naked Gun" star posted new photos of her costar – and rumored romantic partner – in a Friday, Aug. 1 post on Instagram to celebrate the release of the highly anticipated film (in theaters now).

In the sweet black-and-white snaps, Anderson and Neeson smile wide in one picture as the latter throws popcorn from a mini movie theater bucket. In another, he sprinkles a few pieces of the salty snack over Anderson's head as she laughs. One cute picture features Neeson capturing the "Baywatch" bombshell with a camera as she lies down and he leans over her.

'The Naked Gun' review: Liam Neeson spoofs himself in zany cop reboot

Earlier this week, the Hollywood A-listers (who star in the reboot of the beloved 1980s and '90s action franchise) participated in a "Today" show interview with the morning show's coanchor Craig Melvin, who asked the question on everyone's minds.

"What's the deal here?" Melvin bluntly asked July 29, addressing "red carpet action" and relationship rumors. "You're both single right now. There's clearly chemistry on display throughout this film. Are you two an item?"

Neeson replied, "Craig!" as Anderson quipped, "What? I don't understand the question." Neeson explained that "I had never met Pamela before. We met on set. And we discovered we had a lovely, budding chemistry as two actors."

Neeson also addressed his approach to their chemistry, saying "like, 'Oh, this is nice. Let's not mold this. Let's just let it breathe,' and that's what we did."

Neeson was married to British actress Natasha Richardson from 1994 until her death at 45 years old in 2009, while Anderson has had four husbands: Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, rap rocker Kid Rock, poker player Rick Salomon and Dan Hayhurst.

Last week, as the costars posed on the red carpet at the film's London premiere, Anderson leaned in and planted Neeson a smooch on his cheek. She was also seen clasping the Oscar nominee's hand around her left hip as the potential lovebirds took photos with one of the film's producers.
