FORT PIERCE, FL – Jury selection has begun in the criminal trial of a man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club while he was running for reelection nearly a year ago.

Ryan Routh, 59, faces charges of attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer and several weapons violations.

Federal prosecutors say a Secret Service agent canvassing the sixth hole of Trump International Golf Club on Sept. 15, 2024, spotted the barrel of a rifle through the chain-link fence. The agent drew his weapon and fired several times, prompting the gunman to drop his own weapon and run. Local sheriff's deputies arrested Routh a short time later.

The incident occurred just months after a bullet grazed Trump's ear in another attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania. Inside Routh's car, deputies found two additional license plates, six cellphones, a passport and a handwritten list of venues where Trump was scheduled to appear.

Routh, who will represent himself, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

What to know as Ryan Routh's trial begins

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has scheduled three days for jury selection, summoning 180 people to a federal courthouse in Fort Pierce in groups of 60.

The process began at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 8. Cannon, who dismissed Trump's classified documents case in 2024, aims to seat 12 jurors and four alternates by Sept. 10. Opening statements are scheduled for the following day.

Prosecutors earmarked four weeks for the trial but have said it could end sooner.

Routh is representing himself, though standby counsel will remain at his table. Cannon said last week Routh will wear business clothing rather than jail garb and will be allowed to use the podium, but not roam the courtroom freely.
