Saturday night's $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot will be the second-largest in the drawing's history, but is it a good idea to run out and buy 100 tickets? The odds say no — officials say your chances of winning the lottery are approximately 292 million to 1.
How does that compare to the odds of being affected by assorted weather phenomena and other wild events? Let's take a look:
Lightning: 1 In 1 Million
Those are the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year. Of course, the odds of being struck in your lifetime increase, but it's still a long shot — there's only a 1 in 10,000 chance of being hit by a bolt of lightning during your time on Earth.
Tornadoes: Once Every 913,125 Days
Per former Weather Channel Severe Weather Expert Dr. Greg Forbes, that's how often a tornado touches down in a particular spot in the central United States (approximately once every 2,500 years). Elsewhere in the U.S., the odds dip to roughly once in more than 10,000 years.
Death By Tsunami: 1 In 500,000
According to a Live Science article, these are the odds of an American dying in a tsunami. However, the odds increase to roughly 1 in 50,000 worldwide, the article states.
Death By Plane Crash: 1 In 11 Million
It could be weather-related, or it might be a mechanical issue, but the odds of a plane crashing are quite small, according to Gizmodo. Still, higher odds than winning tonight's Powerball jackpot.
Dying In A Flood: 1 In 30,000
Fast-moving water is extremely deadly, and water rescues in flooded areas are very frequent. Taking the risk of driving down a flooded street can make death by flood much more likely, says Live Science.
Earthquake: 1 In 131,890
According to Live Science, the odds of dying in an earthquake are quite slim, but it is much more likely if you live in an earthquake zone.
Death By Natural Forces: 1 In 3,357
This is the chance you will be killed by any of the natural forces — heat, snow, earthquakes, floods — all of the weather phenomena combined, according to Live Science.
