A 40-year-old is facing charges after authorities say he was found allegedly living in a crawl space of an Oregon condominium complex "for an extended period of time," authorities said.
Beniamin Bucur, 40, was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and unlawful possession of meth, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said in a press release Thursday.
He was arrested after deputies responded to the complex near Happy Valley, nearly 16 miles outside of Portland, just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday. The sheriff's office said they arrived at the complex after a witness reported seeing a man who was not known to live there park his car and walk to the back of one of the buildings, the sheriff's office said.
"The witness also noticed the door to the crawl space was open and light was coming from inside," the press release added. "The door then closed."
Deputies at the scene discovered that the door of the crawl space had been damaged and locked, according to the sheriff's office. The owner of the home gave deputies the keys to the space and told them that no one was meant to be in there. The owner also reported previously hearing strange noises coming from it.
The keys to the space did not work, prompting deputies to breach the door, the press release said. Inside, deputies discovered Bucur.
"He had taken significant steps to improve the conditions of the crawl space and was obviously living inside," the sheriff's office said. "Deputies observed a bed, lights, chargers, TVs, and other electronics plugged into the power of the house. Deputies estimate he had been living there for an extended period of time."
A pipe with white residue was also found in the space, which tested positive for methamphetamine.
The sheriff's office did not share how long Bucur could have been living in that space.
Bucur was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on Thursday, and his bail was set at $75,000 during a preliminary hearing, according to the sheriff's office. It is not clear if Bucur has an attorney at this time.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about this incident to get in touch.
