The last time a player successfully defended their U.S. Open title was in 2014, when Serena Williams won her third consecutive trophy (and sixth overall U.S. Open) on the hard courts of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Now, Aryna Sabalenka has successfully won back-to-back U.S. Opens, triumphing over American tennis player Amanda Anisimova in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. It's Sabalenka's fourth Grand Slam victory in her career; the Belarusian tennis player also won the Australian Open twice, in 2023 and 2024.
Ahead of the tournament, Sabalenka said in a press conference, "Being defending champion is an amazing feeling. Gives you a lot of great vibes and a lot of excitement going into the tournament. It's [a] very important tournament for me; last slam of the year. I learned a lot of tough lessons this season on the Grand Slams. I really hope for the best here at the U.S. Open, knowing how much I love play here, knowing how much of the support I feel. It's an amazing place. I really hope I'll do my best here."
This year, Sabalenka lost in both the Australian Open and French Open finals, and lost at Wimbledon in the semifinals to Anisimova in three sets. After making it back into the U.S. Open finals, Sabalenka told reporters that if she lifts the winner's trophy again, "It's going to feel amazing. If I'll be able to hold that trophy, it's going to mean a lot for me. I'll be just the happiest person on earth, probably."
