Moscow authorities restrict publication of photos and videos of aftermath of drone strikes

MOSCOW, May 13 (Reuters) - Moscow authorities have imposed restrictions on the publication of ‌photos and videos showing the aftermath of "terrorist ‌attacks", including drone strikes, the office of Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday.

Reuters

An order appearing on the mayor's official website, referring to the city's "Anti-terrorist Commission" said the directive was aimed at "preventing the ‌dissemination of unreliable information".

It prevents media, as well as individuals and emergency services, from publishing any pictures or videos of "terrorist acts, including drone attacks" until they appear on websites of the Defence Ministry or city government.

"The restrictions also ‌apply to the consequences of attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles and other means of destruction, actions aimed at causing harm to the life and health of citizens or damaging property, ‌including critical infrastructure," the order said.

It said the restrictions did not apply to announcements intended to maintain ‌public order.

Violations, it said, would be punishable by fines equivalent to between $400 and $680 for individuals, with much higher sums applying to officials or ‌legal entities.

Other parts of Russia have already imposed similar bans.

BEIJING/SINGAPORE, May 14 (Reuters) - When Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping sit down to a lavish state banquet in Beijing on Thursday, one Chinese cuisine is likely to feature on the ‌menu: Huaiyang food, from the region surrounding Shanghai, known for its mild and subtle flavours, refined knife-work and ‌emphasis on seasonal dishes.

For decades, China has used the powerful symbolism of food during landmark official events and when receiving distinguished foreign visitors. In China's modern history, famines and political turmoil that caused decades of widespread rationing turned food into a potent status symbol in Chinese culture.

"One of the key strengths of Huaiyang cuisine is its broad appeal. Its flavours are widely acceptable and accessible to most people ... including international guests," said Shi Qiang, executive chef at Gui Hua Lou, an upscale Huaiyang cuisine restaurant in Shanghai.

"From the overall philosophy of Huaiyang cuisine, state ‌banquets are not centered on luxury ingredients, they don't rely on expensive items, extravagance is simply not the focus."

One of the eight major regional cuisines of China, Huaiyang cuisine has long played a starring role at major diplomatic events. It was served at the 1949 "founding banquet" when the People's Republic was established, at China's 50th anniversary commemoration banquet in 1999, as well as a 2002 banquet hosted by then-President Jiang Zemin for the visiting U.S. President George W. Bush.

Food has also featured in unexpected viral moments when foreign officials visited China in recent years. In 2023, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen joked about eating "magic mushrooms" at a ‌Yunnan cuisine restaurant in Beijing, while then-U.S. Vice President Joe Biden ate at a humble Beijing eatery in 2011 famed for its fried liver.

China even created a chicken dish named after U.S. top diplomat Henry Kissinger, served to him during his secret visit in 1971, and dishes served to foreign leaders are often turned into "set banquets" by local restaurants.

Some iconic Huaiyang dishes include tender, springy "lion's head" pork meatballs, Yangzhou fried rice, "squirrel fish" deep-fried in a sweet-and-sour sauce, and "wensi tofu" - a block of tofu sliced into thousands ‌of fine strands.

The cuisine heavily features ingredients native to the Yangtze river basin like freshwater fish, eel and bamboo shoots, as well as minimal seasoning to highlight their freshness.

"It's great for banquets because it's lighter than the food of Shandong in China's north, not spicy like the foods of the southwest (like ‌Sichuanese), and more approachable and less reliant on exotic ingredients than Cantonese, the big cuisine of the south," said Christopher St. Cavish, a food writer based in Shanghai.

"In the most basic description, it's 'safe'. It's the equivalent of serving chicken at a banquet in Washington, DC. No one is going to get offended or find it too hot to eat or ‌too exotic to try."

During Trump's last China visit in 2017, he was served Huaiyang-style dishes like braised vegetables in soup and stewed beef with tomato - a nod to his penchant for well-done steak.

Starmer faces possible leadership challenge, vows to fight on

By Elizabeth Piper, Andrew MacAskill and Muvija M

Reuters

LONDON, May 14 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced the increasing prospect of a leadership challenge on Thursday, with his health minister reported to be ready to resign and his former deputy calling on him to "reflect" on his position.

Starmer, who has repeatedly said he would fight ‌to keep his job, has so far been unable to stem the tide of calls for him to set a timetable for his departure after his Labour Party suffered ‌some of its worst losses in local elections last week.

While the number of calls for him to resign ebbed on Wednesday, when his government turned to King Charles to set out its agenda for a new parliamentary term, Thursday was set to become yet another showdown for Britain's prime minister.

Wes Streeting, the country's centrist health minister, was expected to resign later on Thursday to try to launch a leadership campaign, the Times newspaper reported, although Starmer's allies questioned whether he had the necessary number of backers required.

Starmer's former deputy, Angela Rayner, announced she had been cleared of deliberate wrongdoing over her tax affairs, an impediment to any leadership bid from her, but she would not say whether she wanted to launch a bid to oust the prime minister.

STARMER SHOULD REFLECT, RAYNER SAYS

"I've said to Keir this is a really significant moment for our party ‌and the country ... The pace of change hasn't been enough for voters to see, and also mistakes have really blown us off course and made voters doubt us," she told the Guardian newspaper, adding he should "reflect on" stepping aside.

On her own leadership ambitions, Rayner, 46, said: "I’ll play my part in doing everything we possibly can to deliver the change, because it's not a personal ambition, I know the difference it makes."

She said in a separate statement that Britain's tax authorities had cleared her of tax avoidance, with no fine or penalty applied, a move she described as exonerating her "of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax".

Starmer, 63, had hoped to end the calls for him to resign, which began at the weekend when the scale of the losses in elections to councils in England and the parliaments in Scotland and Wales hit home.

REEVES WARNS OF CHAOS

He has adopted a "business as usual" approach and has received support from the majority of his cabinet team of top ‌ministers. Sources close to him say he is determined to run if a leadership contest is triggered.

His finance minister, Rachel Reeves, warned lawmakers against "plunging the country into chaos" at a time when Britain's anaemic economy was turning a corner. The economy grew unexpectedly in March.

She told the BBC that waiting lists for Britain's public health service were falling because of government investment.

"If we put that at risk, we put at risk the investment in our public services and also the growth that is necessary to help people with the cost of living," she said.

BOSS SAYS BUSINESSES BEING HIT BY TURMOIL

For now, a leadership race has yet to be triggered, but the political instability has pushed borrowing costs higher, with some investors nervous over the possible election of a more left-wing, tax-and-spend Labour ‌prime minister.

The boss of Aviva, one of Britain's biggest financial companies, complained on Thursday that businesses were being hammered by the political turmoil.

"There have been too many changes of government strategy, leadership, just in my six years of being CEO, and I think that is harmful to a major economy such as the UK and how we are perceived abroad," CEO Amanda Blanc told Reuters.

If Starmer were replaced, the new leader would be Britain's seventh prime minister in ‌around 10 years.

A poll by Survation published this week of Labour members found that a left-wing candidate would most likely win any leadership contest if the prime minister resigned.

Among the possible candidates on the left are Rayner, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and Ed Miliband, the minister for energy security and net zero. Burnham does not have the necessary seat in parliament to mount a challenge and would need a lawmaker to stand down to give him the chance to run.

For now both wings are canvassing support.

One Labour lawmaker, who has not called ‌for the prime minister to resign, said he was approached by an ally of Streeting this week to ask for support.

"He is a nice guy, but we don't agree on the big issues," said the lawmaker, who is on the left of the party.

NY ranks among best states for working moms, but one major cost stands out

New York is among the best states for working moms, a WalletHub studyrevealed.

USA TODAY

According to WalletHub, women make up around half of the workforce, and in 2025, around 74% of moms with children under 18-years-old were employed. However, the study states that mothers often face many challenges in the workforce.

For example, WalletHub states that women make about 82% of what men make per hour on average, creating a financial disparity that could put an extra strain on working moms. Other issues that can factor into the success and opportunities for working moms could vary from state to state, depending on things like child care access, parental leave policies and good public schools.

"The U.S. still has a lot of work to do when it comes to improving conditions for working moms, given the wage gap and the lack of representation women have in certain leadership positions. However, some states are significantly better than others," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said. "The best states for working moms provide equitable pay for women and a strong potential for career advancement, along with robust parental leave policies and high-quality child care, health care, and schools."

WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 17 metrics to determine which are the best and worst states for working moms.

Here is what to know about New York's ranking.

Why is NY a good state for working moms?

New York was ranked the 9th best state for working moms, according to a WalletHub study.

New York State is among the top 10 best states for working moms, according to WalletHub. The Empire State scored the No. 9 spot, with an overall score of 53.37.

NY scored the No. 12 spot for the child care rank and offers the second-best daycare systems in the country, the study found. That being said, New York was also ranked to have the highest childcare costs in the country compared to the percentage of the median women's income.
