Massive flooding hit Chattanooga, Tennessee, stranding vehicles and prompting rescues as officials declared a local emergency.

Video captured on Tuesday, Aug. 12, shows cars and trucks in Tennessee stranded on a flooded interstate, as the waters forced all lanes to shut down.

The waters on the interstate near Chattanooga were so deep that some cars were almost completely submerged, and only their roofs were visible through the brown, murky waters.

"I-24 is closed between I-75 and US 27 in Hamilton County due to widespread flooding. Right now our priority is I-24," Rae Anne Bradley, the regional communications officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation in Chattanooga and the Cumberland Plateau, stated in a post on X at 8:46 p.m. ET.

Hours later, the roads reopened after the water receded, and disabled vehicles were cleared, according to Bradley.

A mother, father and child were killed when a tree fell on the car they were riding in during the rain and flooding on Tuesday, Aug.12 in Chattanooga, according to reports from the Chattanooga Times Free Press and NBC News.

The deaths came as historic floods swept through the eastern part of the state.

Record-breaking rain

On Tuesday, Chattanooga received 6.52 inches of rain, with the majority of the rain falling between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. local time, Dan Pydynowski, a lead meteorologist with AccuWeather, told USA TODAY in an email.

"That was a record amount of rainfall for the date, easily breaking the old record of 1.93 inches of rainfall that fell on Aug. 12, 2013," wrote Pydynowski.

Areas just east of downtown Chattanooga reportedly received 6 inches.

Areas in Eastern and Central Tennessee remain under flash flood watches as more showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout Wednesday, Aug. 13, according to Pydynowski.

Some of Wednesday's storms could "contain additional flooding downpours," the meteorologist added.

Storms could continue to roll through Eastern Tennessee on Thursday, Aug. 14, and Friday, Aug. 15.
