Police declare terrorist incident after 2 Jewish men stabbed in London

Latest news on antisemitic arson attack targeting Jewish community ambulances 03:51

CBS News

A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Wednesday after two people were stabbed in a heavily Jewish neighborhood of North London, according to British authorities. Police declared it a terrorist incident and said they were looking into possible connections with a spate of recent antisemitic attacks.

London's mayor said the "appalling attack on two Jewish Londoners" was part of a "series of shocking antisemitic attacks" in the British capital, and he said police would increase patrols in the area.

The suspect was seen running along a main road in Golders Green, long home to a large Jewish population, "armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public," according to a statement byShomrim, a community group that runs a volunteer neighborhood watch program.

The group said members "responded immediately and detained the suspect," until police "attended and deployed a taser" to take the man into custody.

The London Metropolitan Police said counterterrorism officers were leading the investigation and they confirmed a 45-year-old man had been placed under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.

A few hours after the stabbing, the head of the Metropolitan Police's counterterrorism unit, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, confirmed during a news conference that the attack "has now formally been declared a terrorist incident."

"We are also working with our partners in the security services to ensure we have a full intelligence picture and one of the lines of inquiry is whether this attack was deliberately targeting the Jewish community in London," he said. "That community are strong, but they will be incredibly concerned to see and hear what has happened today, particularly in the wake of other incidents in recent weeks."

Through an intermediary, a shadowy group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia claimed responsibility for the attack. The group has claimed it was behind several recentantisemitic attacks in London and Europe, and a representativerecently told CBS Newsit would continue to target "U.S. and Israeli interests worldwide."

Both victims of the stabbing, men aged 34 and 76, were in stable condition, the police said. They were initially treated by Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer emergency response organization, according to Shomrim.

Another local group, the Community Security Trust, said in asocial media postthat there "has been a knife attack today in Golders Green. The suspect has been arrested," offering thanks to Shomrim, Hatzola and the London police "for their swift response."

Speaking in parliament Wednesday, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the attack as "deeply concerning."

"There is now a police investigation and I think we all need to do everything we can to support that ... and be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offenses, the like of which we've seen too much recently," he said.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, in a social media post, confirmed "an appalling attack on two Jewish Londoners in Golders Green."

"London's Jewish community have been the target of a series of shocking antisemitic attacks. There must be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society," said Khan, adding that police had "stepped up high visibility patrols in the area."

The attack comes after a string of incidents over the past monthtargeting Jewish communitiesin north London, including an arson attack thatsaw several of Hatzola's ambulances destroyedin the same area.

After another incident, an attack on a synagogue in northwest London on April 18, the U.K.'s chief rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, said the "sustainedcampaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish communityis gathering momentum."

On Tuesday, after anattempted arson attackin the same area, the head of policing in northwest London said: "We recognize that this incident will heighten concerns in the Golders Green area, where residents have already faced a series of attacks."

"Since last month's attack in Golders Green, we have stepped up our work to reassure communities," he said. "This includes armed police patrols as well as deployments of officers from Project Servator, who are specially trained to spot anyone who may be planning or preparing to commit criminal acts."

Can Lakers beat the Thunder? What we learned from series vs. Rockets

LeBron Jamesand theLos Angeles Lakersbounced back in a big way to avoid playing Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round series against theHouston Rockets.

USA TODAY Sports

James had 28 points, eight assists and seven rebounds asthe Lakers beat the Rockets 98-78on Friday, May 1. It was his league-record 157th playoff game with at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Lakers played with a sense of urgency and energy that was missing from their home loss on Wednesday.

“My mindset was to play with aggression,” James said during a postgame interview on Prime. “(The Rockets) changed the aggression level in Games 4 and 5. … Most of our guys haven't been in a close-out game situation. … So I had to come out and set the tone for my team and just try to find a way to close this thing out.”

The Lakers will be asked to produce the same level of energy if they want to compete with the defending champions, theOklahoma City Thunder, in the second round.

The Lakers must continue to get strong contributions from players such as Rui Hachimura, who helped neutralize the Rockets and kept them from having any chance of battling back into the game with several big shots. Hachimura finished with 21 points and six rebounds. He shot 5-of-7 from the 3-point line.

The Lakers will need all the rest they can get before the series with the Thunder begins on Tuesday, May 5, in Oklahoma City. The three days off won’t be enough time to get guard Luka Doncic back, though.

Doncic has not played since suffering a hamstring injury on April 2 in a blowout loss to the Thunder during the regular season.

Without the guard, Los Angeles will be tasked with overcoming the Thunder's defense and finding a way to generate enough offense to match the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Austin Reaves will be asked to shoulder some of that offensive responsibility. He made his return to the Lakers on Wednesday for Game 5 after missing time due to a left oblique muscle strain. He returned to the starting lineup in Game 6.

Reaves has 37 points, eight assists and seven rebounds combined in his first two games back. He will need to round back into form at the 3-point line, where he's made just 2-of-12 this week.

The Thunder will enter the series well-rested, having swept the Phoenix Suns. OKC will enter the second round having had a full week off.

The Thunder could also see the return of Jalen Williams in the series. He has not played since April 22 due to a hamstring strain.

Mariners' Brendan Donovan set for Double-A rehab assignment

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners third baseman Brendan Donovan will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Arkansas on Monday, general manager Justin Hollander said.

Associated Press

Donovan left Seattle's5-0 loss to the Texas Rangerson April 17 with a left hip issue, and then was placed on the 10-day injured list three days later with a left groin muscle strain.

Donovan was also dealing with right groin discomfort in early April and suggested it might be related to an Oct. 7 sports hernia surgery.

The plan is for the 2025 All-Star to join the Mariners in Chicago on May 8.

“Really positive the way that Donnie (Donovan) has progressed through this. Probably not going to be activated for this home stand,” Hollander said Friday. “The idea would be a couple rehab games in Arkansas then meet us in Chicago.”

Donovan, 29, is hitting .304 and has three home runs, eight RBIs and nine walks in 18 games this season. The Marinersacquired Donovan from the Cardinalsin February in a three-team trade involving the Tampa Bay Rays.

He fielded grounders and took batting practice Friday before Seattle faced Kansas City.

In other moves, the Mariners recalled LHP Josh Simpson from Triple-A Tacoma and placed RHP Matt Brash (2-0, 0.00 ERA) on the 15-day IL, retroactive to Thursday. Brash was removed Wednesday during his relief appearance against the Twins. Simpson made nine appearances in Tacoma, allowing one run in 9 1/3 innings.
