Failure of US-Iran talks is a blow to hopes of finding an off-ramp to crisis

We watched the sun go down in Islamabad and then come up again as these marathon talks went on. To endwithout a dealmarks a fundamental blow to nascent hopes of finding an off-ramp to this crisis.

These were meetings of huge consequence –– the highest-level talks between US and Iranian officials since the formation of the Islamic Republic in 1979 –– and it’s hard to underestimate just how complex the discussions have been.

Beyond what was said in the room, technical papers were exchanged and reviewed repeatedly. But the two sides were simply too far apart, not just in substance, but in style and temperament. The respective delegations went into these talks with vastly different approaches: US Vice PresidentJD Vanceappeared to be after a relatively quick solution after the implementation of a two-week ceasefire, but Tehran typically moves much slower, negotiating over the long term.

With Vance saying America has put forward its “best and final” offer, the ball now seems to sit firmly in the Iranian court. And if there are going to be more talks, Iran will have to change its position somehow.

Iran believes the talksfailed because of “excessive” US demands, and it’s clear from both sides that nuclear enrichment is a key sticking point. Tehran has insisted for years it would not build a nuclear weapon and that it only wished to pursue a nuclear power program, but its actions ramping up the level of enrichment of uranium in recent years caused great concern in the West — and were the catalyst for last year’s 12-day conflict with Israel. Iran still appears unwilling to give up on enrichment. The White House wants a cast-iron commitment that Iran won’t build a nuclear weapon.

As the talks played out, we saw various statements released through Iranian media that appeared aimed at a domestic audience, some explaining why Tehran had even entered diplomatic talks at all with its longtime enemy. Its foreign ministry went so far as to spell out that diplomacy was “the continuation of the sacred jihad of the defenders of the Iranian land.”

The two-week ceasefire itself was struck against the backdrop of a maximalist threat from US President Donald Trump to annihilate a civilization and blow up Iran’s power plants and key infrastructure. Whether that threat comes into play again is now a key question.

Two other fundamental questions hang in the air: How will Iran respond to the US walking away? And how much longer will the global economy be stuck in limbo?

Former NATO chief targets PM Starmer, warning UK's security in 'peril'

LONDON, April 14 (Reuters) - Britain's national security is "in peril" because of political complacency and under-investment in defence, former NATO chief George Robertson will say on Tuesday, in a rare ‌public rebuke of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's handling of military spending.

Reuters

Robertson, who helped draft a ‌Strategic Defence Review commissioned by Starmer when he came to power in 2024, is expected to say in a lecture that Britain has become increasingly exposed to external threats.

Robertson, who served in the 1990s as defence secretary from Starmer's Labour Party, told the Financial Times there was a gap between the prime minister's rhetoric and action on defence, and Starmer was "not willing to make the necessary investment".

In his lecture, to be delivered later on Tuesday ‌in Salisbury, southern England, he is expected to call out finance minister Rachel Reeves for devoting "only 40 words" to defence in a budget speech last autumn and not mentioning it at all in an update last month, the FT said.

"Britain's national security and safety is in peril," he is due to say, according to an excerpt reported by the FT and the BBC. "We are under-prepared. We are under-insured. We are under attack. We are not safe."

'CORROSIVE COMPLACENCY'

Robertson's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. There ‌was no immediate response from Starmer's office.

Starmer has blamed under-investment in the military on 14 years of rule by the rival Conservative Party, and has promised the largest sustained rise in defence spending since the Cold War, to reach 3% of national output in the next parliament.

The government has said it would publish a 10-year defence investment plan soon, aimed at meeting the ambitions set out in the 2024 ‌review co-written by Robertson, which called for a shift towards drones, digital warfare and data-driven combat systems reflecting lessons drawn from the war in Ukraine.

Starmer said last week that the war in Iran must be a turning point for Britain, pledging ‌to strengthen the economy and military to cope with a more "volatile and dangerous" world.

But Robertson will accuse Britain's political leadership of a "corrosive complacency" towards defence and describe decisions made by "non-military experts in the Treasury" as "vandalism".

"We cannot defend Britain with an ever-expanding welfare budget," he is expected to say.

He will ‌say the security outlook has deteriorated sharply following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and heightened tensions in the Middle East, calling it one of the most dangerous periods in decades.

Masters 2026: Brooks Koepka's driver was set to the wrong setting

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Brooks Koepka’s driver was set to the wrong setting.

Yahoo Sports

Admittedly, this gets into the weeds of golf nerdity, but when you’re teeing it up at the Masters, golf nerdity is part of doing business.

So let’s explain:

Koepka uses a Titleist GT3, which allows for different settings. These settings are adjustable depending on what kind of ball flight you want — neutral, fade or draw. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but the gist is you set the club to your preferred setting.

Koepka’s preferred setting is “A1,” or standard. But on the driving range Thursday after Round 1 he realized his driver had been set to B1, which is more “flat.”

“No one noticed it,” he said. “Switching back to A1, which is what we usually had it and just driving it better.”

Per Data Golf, Koepka lost .41 strokes off the tee Thursday, but gained .86 on Friday. Not surprising, he hit seven fairways Thursday compared to nine Friday and his score showed it — 72 in Round 1 vs. 69 in Round 2, which puts him 3-under for the tournament, nine shots back of Rory McIlroy.

While Koepka explained the error Friday, he didn’t make much of a thing of it.

“Ball striking has been really good this week. Putted better today. Short game has been kind of iffy,” he said after his round. “But, yeah, I like the way I'm playing right now. Just need to be a little bit more aggressive.”

Koepka, playing in his first major since leaving LIV Golf, currently sits in a tie for 13th.
