JJ Redick on one adjustment he will make for Lakers vs. Thunder series

There is a growing feeling thatLos Angeles Lakerscoach JJ Redick is becoming a good NBA head coach. He has guided the team to at least 50 regular-season wins in both of his two years at the helm, and he just directed them to a victory in the first round of the playoffs over theHouston Rockets— a victory no one predicted when that series began.

USA TODAY

But no one is immune to criticism, and there have been times when some have gotten on Redick for not calling quick enough timeouts during an opponent's hot streak. With the Lakers about to begin the Western Conference semifinals against the defending NBA championOklahoma City Thunder, he knows that he will have to adjust how he uses timeouts.

Hetalked aboutthe adjustments he will make in that department during a media session on Monday.

“They're really good at runs, and part of that is how good their defense is, their ability to create turnovers," Redick said. "The live-ball turnovers really kill you. ... I've got to be more diligent than I normally am. I like my timeouts, I like going into the fourth quarter with four timeouts, I like having two in the last 30 seconds. I don't think you have the luxury of worrying about that because the games get away from you so quick because of how explosive they are when they go on their runs.”

Los Angeles lost all four of its regular-season games to the Thunder during the regular season, and it lost three of those games by at least 29 points. The Thunder were first in defensive rating, second in opponents' turnover percentage and first in points off turnovers per game during the regular season, and they also had an incredible 11.1 net rating.

Blunting their momentum will be a big key for L.A. in this series if it is to be competitive. That means not only limiting live-ball turnovers but also calling quick timeouts when Oklahoma City starts a spurt and scoring immediately out of those timeouts.

Salmon and birds killed in ‘tragic’ chemical spill on River Spey tributary

A devastating pollution incident has wiped out a significant number of fish, eels, and birds in the Knockando burn, a tributary of the River Spey in Moray.

A chemical, thought to be caustic soda, is understood to have entered the water, "destroying" various species in recent days.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) is investigating the potential pollution. Fly fishers warn the burn's salmon population has been "wiped out" and could take years to recover.

Duncan Ferguson, director of the Spey Fishery Board, said the pollution incident was one of the largest he had seen in 36 years of working on the river, with a two-kilometre stretch of the Knockando burn affected.

He said: “It’s a tragic event.

“It’s a really bad outcome and it didn’t have to happen.”

The chemical is thought to be industrially linked, he said.

The pollution incident comes at the peak period for fly fishing on the Spey, and just 10 days after another pollution incident at Spey tributary.

Earlier, a number of salmon died after white paint was spilled into the Burn of Carron.

A spokesman for Sepa said: “Sepa are investigating a potential pollution incident in a tributary of the River Spey and are working to identify the source and impacts.”

“A group of 7-9 stray dogs (including German Shepard breed and mixed breeds) approached her and violently attacked her,” organizer Rhenell Schiller wrote.

Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said in a statement to 9 News that the California city is actively responding to dangerous stray dog situations in the area.

“This is also a community issue. Pet overpopulation and roaming animals don’t happen without a lack of responsible ownership,” added Lee.

It is currently unclear if anyone has been or will be charged in connection with the attack.

PEOPLE reached out to the Stockton Police Department (SPD) and Lee for comment on Sunday, May 3.

Iran threatens to attack U.S. forces in Strait of Hormuz after Trump launches mission to guide ships

Iranwarned the United States on Monday not to approach or enter theStrait of Hormuzas the American military launches a new effort to “guide” stranded ships through thecritical waterway.

NBC Universal

President Donald Trumpannounced that starting Monday morning the U.S. military would help free ships that have been “locked up” and unable to transit the key trade route amidthe maritime standoff between Tehran and Washington.

It's the latest bid to break Iran's stranglehold over the strait, which has left global shipping at an effective standstill and sentenergy prices spiraling.

Iran quickly pushed back.

The strait’s security remains under the control of Iran’s armed forces and any safe passage must be carried out in coordination with Tehran, Iran's military command cautioned.

“We warn that any foreign armed force, especially the aggressive military of America should they intend to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz, will be subjected to attack,” Major General Pilot Ali Abdollahi said in a statement carried by state TV channel IRIB.

He added that “any aggressive action” by the U.S. to disrupt the situation will result in “nothing but further complication and jeopardizing the security of vessels in this area.”

In a lengthy TruthSocial post late Sunday,Trump said the U.S. will “guide ships”of countries not involved in the Middle East crisis safely out of the strait, “so that they can freely and ably get on with their business.”

Trump added that what he dubbed “Project Freedom” would begin Monday morning Middle East time, but it was not clear when the operation would formally begin.

U.S. Central Command, which has been enforcing Washington’s blockade of Iranian ports, said that 15,000 service members, guided-missile destroyers, over 100 land and sea-based aircraft and multi-domain unmanned platforms will be involved in the new operation.

The Joint Maritime Information Center said that the U.S. has established an “enhanced security area” to the south of usual shipping routes to support transit.

It said vessels should consider routing via Oman territorial waters as usual routes should be considered “extremely hazardous due the presence of mines that have not been fully surveyed and mitigated.”

It was not immediately clear whether any ships had begun using the route or the U.S. mission.

Hundreds of ships and their crew have been stranded in the area since Iran launched attacks and threatened shipping in the wake of thejoint U.S.-Israeli assaultmore than two months ago.

Many of these crews are running low on food and other necessities, Trump said, calling his move to free them up a “humanitarian gesture” by the U.S.

Two shipswere attacked in the strait this weekend, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center said.

Trump's announcement came hours after Iran said it was reviewing the U.S. response to its latest proposal to end the war, though neither side has offeredmuch optimismabout moving beyond the current ceasefire.

Mediator Pakistan said Monday that it had facilitated the transfer of 22 Iranian sailors fromthe “Touska” container ship seized by U.S. forces last month. It described the move as a “confidence-building measure.”

The sailors were flown to Pakistan on Sunday night, a statement from the country’s foreign ministry said, and will be handed over to Iranian authorities. The ship will be taken to Pakistani territorial waters, the statement added, to be returned to its original owners after necessary repairs.
