When you told your dog you were taking them to their “fur-ever” home, you may have meant your house, apartment or condo. But home is where the heart is, and if you’re lucky, your dog considers you their home. However, because dogs communicate differently, you may be wondering how you can tell if your dog feels safe? After all, you want them to know they can trust you and depend on you.
“Winning the trust of a dog is one of the most special things you can do,” says Annie-Mae Levy, CFBA, professional dog trainer at Woofz by nove8, a puppy and dog training app. “It’s super rewarding to take care of an entirely different creature that is dependent on you for all their needs and get to the point where you are unconditionally accepted.”
Levy says dogs show their trust and devotion in different ways through their body language and behaviors. While some of them can be cute, there are also some funny signs your dog feels comfortable and happy that you might miss! However, when you notice them, it’ll be like a double dose of delight. To help you know what some of those are, a trainer reveals some of the most common ways to tell your dog trusts you. That way, you’ll feel confident that your dog knows you love them and they feel relaxed whenever they are with you.

6 Hilarious Signs Your Dog Feels Completely at Home With You
It’s heartwarming when you notice your dog feels safe enough to show you all their colors. Sometimes, it’s even downright funny. Levy shares six funny signs that mean your dog feels safe when they are with you. Scroll on, and let us know if you recognize any.
1. They go belly-up when resting
How can you tell your dog is comfortable? Levy says sleeping “belly-up” may look goofy—your dog’s floppy ears may be all over the place, and their tongue may be sticking out upside down. However, behind the silliness of this dog behavior is a pup who deeply trusts you.
“Sleeping with their stomach exposed is a hugely vulnerable thing for any animal to do, as it leaves their vital organs very at risk of attack,” Levy says. “For an animal to relax comfortably in this position, it needs to feel totally safe in their environment and, for group-living animals, that their group members will step in to protect it if needed.”
2. They’re a total blanket hog
Even small dogs can somehow steal all of your covers and leave you sleeping at the edge of the bed. Levy says this is a sign that a dog feels at home with you and is a reminder that dogs are originally group-living animals.
“They evolved to sleep close to people and dogs they trust for safety,” Levy reminds us. “Although we can find it annoying when our dogs take up too much of the bed or sofa, this desire to sleep close to their human again shows just how comfortable your dog is around you.”
3. Forget your bed—they treat you like their pillow
Does your dog consider you the world’s greatest pillow? If so, that’s a good thing! This is one funny way dogs show affection that pet parents often overlook as love.
“Dogs often lean on their favorite people as a way of seeking comfort,” Levy states. “This lean shows that your dog trusts you and enjoys feeling close to you.”

4. They do a full-body wiggle when you walk through the door
For your dog, even a brief trip outside without them can turn into a Y2K-style party. Levy says this hilarious dog behavior is actually a strong social drive and a shows you that your dog really wants to be near you.
“This excitement might be because they feel less safe alone or simply because you’re associated with all the good stuff,” Levy says. “It’s still important, however, to make sure your dog can relax when you’re not around.”
5. They drop everything and run to you when you call
Has your dog ever run full speed toward you at the dog park when you say their name? This endearing and sometimes funny-looking behavior dogs do means they want to engage with you. To them, they consider you the best source of fun around.
“This is a really good indicator of a strong bond between dog and human and can show that a dog truly feels comfortable and most at home in your presence,” Levy says.
6. They bring you slobbery toys
You worked all day, and now your pup wants you to throw a ball or bone 800 times straight? While tossing a spit-laden tennis ball may not be your idea of a good time after a long day, you might change your tune when you know why they’re dropping slobbery toys at your feet.
“Your dog is trusting you with a valuable object here,” Levy says. “For lots of dogs, dropping toys at your feet or into your lap shows a deep desire to engage in cooperative play, which in turn demonstrates that they trust you with their high-value resources.”
So even this this action may make you laugh, it’s actually super sweet.
