The Detroit Red Wings will play two straight home contests following a four-game road swing beginning on Thursday evening against the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena.

It will mark the return of former Red Wings forward Patrick Kane, who departed the organization to rejoin the club that selected him first overall in 2007 and that he helped win three Stanley Cup championships.

But while Kane will be back in Detroit on Thursday, the Red Wings will remain shorthanded.

According to head coach Todd McLellan, both Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton are still at least two weeks away from being able to play. Kasper hasn't played since the club's season opener against the New York Rangers on Oct. 2, while Appleton hasn't played since facing his former Winnipeg Jets teammates on Oct. 4.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings did get forward J.T. Compher back in the lineup following a prolonged absence; he had also been unavailable since Oct. 4 against the Jets.

At practice on Wednesday, goaltender Daniil Tarasov was back on the ice after suffering an injury during the road trip; the expectation is that Michal Postava, who picked up his first career NHL victory on Monday against the Edmonton Oilers, will be returned to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins.

And while Dylan Larkin was absent from practice, McLellan confirmed that it was just a maintenance day.
