Louisiana Shaken By 4.9 Magnitude Earthquake

Louisiana experienced the second-largest earthquake in the state's history Thursday morning.

The magnitude 4.9 quake struck about 6:30 a.m. EST (5:30 a.m. local time) north of Edgefield, Louisiana. That's about 40 miles southeast of Shreveport in northwestern Louisiana.

Reports said the earthquake's shaking was felt across a wide swath of the state and into eastern Texas.

The Shreveport Times reported that the temblorwoke sleeping people and rattled pipes.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

Louisiana experienced its largest quake — a magnitude 5.3 — 20 years ago. It struck about 11:15 p.m. EST (10:15 local time) on Feb. 9, 2006, on Grand Isle on the Gulf Coast.

Volcano Discovery reports thatLouisiana has very few quakes: about 5.3 a year, according to data from the past 56 years. Most of them are below magnitude 3.
