Matthew McConaughey made sure his eldest son, Levi, earned his debut movie role based purely on talent.

The Oscar-winning actor, 55, celebrated the premiere of the film The Lost Bus at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 5, alongside Levi, wife Camila McConaughey and mother Kay McConaughey. Matthew stars in the movie alongside his mother, 93, and his eldest son, 17.

That said, Levi didn't land his first role as a perk of being the child of the beloved How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actor. In fact, Matthew asked for a different type of favor when he sent in the teen's audition tape: Leave out his last name.

During a Q&A segment at the TIFF, Matthew explained Levi's journey to the big screen. While pitching his role as Kevin McKay to his family, Levi immediately showed interest in the character's son.

"'Well, how old is he?' I said, 'He's about your age,'" Matthew told the audience of the father-son conversation. "And then he goes, 'Think I could read for it?' And I didn't say anything. That wasn't enough to make me say 'maybe' or anything."

After Levi inquired about the role "four more times," the family patriarch knew he was serious about auditioning.

"I knew they hadn't cast the part. Pulled out the camera, worked with him on a scene, and sent that to [casting director] Francine Maisler, and I said — remember I had a note? — I said, 'I think it might be good enough for a callback.' And she wrote back, 'I think it might be good enough to show to [director] Paul [Greengrass].'"

Before Francine sent the audition tape to Paul, Matthew asked her, "When you do that, will you do me one favor? Will you pull the last name off so it's just, there's no McConaughey on the end of that?"

Francine agreed, and once Paul saw Levi's audition tape, he knew they had found the perfect actor.

"And then he was told, 'Well, that happens to be Matthew's son.' And in Paul fashion, he was like, 'Even better!'" Matthew continued. "So, this is all due to Paul. My family's in this film because of this man to the left."
