General Hospital fans have been anticipating the death of Monica Quartermaine since actress Leslie Charleson passed earlier this year, now the time has come for the soap to honor the icon.
Co-Headwriters Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten spoke with TV Insider about the stories playing out this fall on the ABC soap opera.
During the discussion, they announced that Monica's death will play a vital part of their plans for this fall. It will deal a devastating blow to the iconic family. Monica's son Jason Morgan along with her sister-in-law and rival Tracy Quartermaine will be effected the most.
The writers teased that Port Charles will come to mourn the iconic doctor who has been an essential part of the fabric of the community for almost 50 years.
This moment of mourning will also leave a chance for an opportunity to be seized.
Monica's death will also bring in an exciting arrival for soap fans with an award winning actress assuming a pivotal role. The writers teased "Into all this steps Erika Slezak's character, who arrives bearing surprising connections to the Quartermaine clan and mysterious ties to others on the canvas."
Who Erika Slezak Might Play?
As Parade previously reported, while Slezak's role has not been confirmed, all signs point to the actress portraying a new role and not her award winning One Life to Live character, Victoria 'Viki' Lord.
One popular theory on social media is that Slezak will be portraying Monica's sister, fans will have to stay tuned to see just how Slezak's character will intertwine with the beloved family.
Fans have been conflicted about Slezak's arrival, but a lot are coming in with an optimistic perspective. One example comes from X where a user wrote "At first, I wasn't excited because I had not been impressed with the crossovers, but this is Erika Slezak, and can you imagine her with Jane Elliott? I'm keeping an open mind. 😉"
Who Is Monica Quartermaine?
As previously mentioned, Monica was portrayed by Leslie Charleson from 1977 until her death in 2025. Charleson's last appearance on screen occurred on December 21, 2023. What many fans may not know is that the role was originated by Patsy Rahn in 1976.
Monica became a staple of the Quartermaine family with her complicated relationship with her husband Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon). Monica raised three children. Alan Jr. (A.J.), Jason, and Emily.
The tribute will begin later this year, viewers can tune into General Hospital airing weekdays on ABC and streaming weeknights on Hulu.
