The rare 1986 proof set consists of five golden coins of different weights, per Silver Eagle Coins.

On one side of the coin is the Temple of Heaven – a place of worship in Beijing built in the 15th century.

Meanwhile, on the flip side, is a panda and bamboo.

The phrase The People's Republic of China is written in Chinese symbols.

The coins were produced by the China Mint Company and a maximum of 10,000 sets were minted.

The one-ounce coin's legal tender was 500 yuan, per Golden Eagle Coin.

Original sets that were produced should have a certificate that proves they are authentic.

The Chinese Gold Panda 1986 set is retailing online for around $5,000, per Golden Eagle Coin.

But some sets are being sold on eBay for at least $6,800.

One seller has advertised their set for a whopping $7,800 on the online marketplace.

Smith Jr has offered an insight into the history behind the currency.

He revealed the set could be bought in Chinese stores that sold items to tourists and foreign officials, per Go Banking Rates.

Other valuable Asian coin sets include the China 1928 Silver Auto Dollar.

If the coin hasn't entered circulation and is in the most pristine condition, it could be worth up to $150,000, per Smith.

The 1995 Panda gold half-ounce coin has been advertised on eBay for almost $7,800.

Smith revealed that a rare Japanese coin that dates back to the 1870s could retail for more than $1,000.

Coin experts have offered tips for collectors who think they have rare currency in their possession.

First, they should look at the date. Coins produced in the 20th century are not as rare as those minted in the 18th.

They should study the gold or silver piece to see if there are any errors, according to Austin Coins.

Collectors should also research to see how many coins were produced.

They should also surf the web to see what similar coins are being sold for on popular marketplaces.
