The deployment was said to have come shortly after the U.K. governmentauthorized the United States to useBritish military bases for defensive operations targeting Iranian missile capabilities that have threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, Downing Street said the aim of those operations was to "degrade the missile sites and capabilities" used in attacks on ships, while emphasizing that Britain does not want to be drawn into a wider regional conflict.

Tensions intensified Sunday afterIran launched two ballistic missilestoward Diego Garcia, according to multiple reports. Neither missile reached its target; one reportedly failed in flight, while the other was intercepted.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi had warned Britain against supporting U.S. or Israeli military action, saying such involvement could further escalate the conflict.

Araghchi told U.K. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper that Iran views Britain's decision to allow U.S. forces to use its bases as "participation in aggression," according to his account of the call, the BBC reported.

He also criticized what he described as the U.K.'s "negative and biased" approach and demanded that it cease cooperation with the United States.

The U.K. did not allow the U.S. to use its bases for initial offensive strikes against Iran but later granted permission for defensive operations in response to Iranian missile threats.

Downing Street said: "We didn't participate in the initial strikes, and we're not getting drawn into the wider war."

Tehran has said it would exercise what it calls its right to self-defense if threatened.

Meanwhile, the U.K. Ministry of Defence said Sunday that Royal Air Force assets, including Typhoon jets, remain engaged in defensive operations in the region.

  • The girl's father attempted to rescue her, but he ultimately was overcome with exhaustion and was unable to swim them to safety

  • The quick thinking of a heroic stranger then saved their lives

A 6-year-old girlnearly drownedat a California beach — until a local surfer came to the rescue.

Coco Green was recently playing in shallow water at Oceanside Harbor in Oceanside when a rip tide pulled her out to sea, according toFox 5 San DiegoandThe California Post.

"I told her, you know, don't go by the jetty, just 'cause the current typically sucks you out," her father, Chris Green, said while speaking to Fox 5.

"Next thing you know, she says she stepped in a hole, and [the tide] just kind of swept her out," he added.

"I just took off and swam out there, as fast as I could," Chris recalled.

However, Chris said that when he finally reached Coco, he realized hewas physically exhaustedand did not have the strength to pull them to safety.

And that's when a stranger came to the rescue.

Lucas Tuab, a local surf instructor who was coaching a competition nearby, happened to see Chris and Coco struggling in the water. He jumped into the ocean while fully clothed and swam out to the father and daughter.

"There wasn't a second that went through my mind that I wasn't gonna jump in that water," Lucas said while speaking about his decision to Fox 5.

"I knew it was a matter of seconds between life or death, and I knew that was my calling right there," he continued. "God put me on that jetty at that moment to be that person to serve. And be that person … to help, you know?"

"And I don't think all the attention should be on me … I think this should be more all about how humans should really justlook out for one another, and that's the moral of the story, I believe," Lucas added.

Chris and Lucas met up the day after the incident to share a hug.

"I don't know what would have happened if he [Lucas] didn't jump in," Chris told Fox 5. "But I'm very thankful that he did."

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 21, as almost 150 guests attended a wedding ceremony at the Preserve at Chocorua in Tamworth, according to ajoint news releasefrom theTamworth Fire/Rescue Departmentand theNew Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office. Local fire crews responded to the scene at around 4:33 p.m local time after receiving reports that a floor had collapsed during a wedding.

"Callers reported that more than 100 people were on the floor when it collapsed into the basement, and multiple people were trapped under beams as well as farming equipment," authorities said in the news release.

Six adults were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, including four who have since been released, according to authorities. Multiple other guests were treated at the scene.

"The full extent of injuries as a result of the incident remains under investigation," authorities said in the news release.

The Tamworth Fire/Rescue Department and the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. Authorities have asked anyone with information that may help with the investigation to contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office.

A spokesperson from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office told USA TODAY on Sunday, March 22, that the agency did not have additional updates to provide on the investigation.

Investigators believe building was over capacity before floor collapse

Multiple mutual aid agencies from nearby communities also responded to the scene or provided station coverage, according to authorities.

When first responders arrived at the scene, authorities discovered that staff at the venue and wedding guests had already provided initial first aid to some guests and used ladders to help those who fell through the collapsed floor. Fire crews provided additional aid to guests and began on-scene evaluations for people who reported injuries.

A preliminary investigation determined that 144 guests were in the venue's Sap House building for the wedding ceremony when the floor collapsed, according to authorities. About half of the guests, nearly 70 people, fell through a roughly 20-by-20-foot opening into the building's basement.

Authorities noted that while the investigation is in its early stages, investigators believe the building was at over capacity before the floor collapsed.

Founded in 1778, the Preserve at Chocorua describes itself on itsFacebook pageas a "stunning 26-acre natural retreat encompassing a historic farmhouse, barn, carriage House, and cottages." According to the venue's website, its Sap House building is a "New England Maple Sugar shack" that can host intimate ceremonies or an indoor and outdoor cocktail hour.

NEED TO KNOW

  • NASA confirmed the 3-foot meteor fragment weighed about a ton and traveled at 35,000 mph before breaking apart

  • Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and a flash of light from the meteorite in the Houston area on Saturday

A Houston resident was left stunned after a meteorite crashed through the roof of her home.

Sherrie James was shocked to discover that a heavy rock had crashed through the roof and two stories of her home in northwest Harris County on Saturday, March 21, after seemingly falling from the sky,Fox 26 Houstonreported.

The crash occurred after reports of a sound like an "explosion" and sightings of "a possible meteor" near Highway 50 at Wiedeville Road and surrounding areas, the Brenham Fire Department (BFD)wroteon Facebook.

"[When] I saw the rock … the first thing that came to my mind was, it's a meteor," James told Fox 26 Houston. "It's very heavy and it doesn't look like cement or like a normal rock, but it's just the weight of it — you can tell it's something different."

Ponderosa Fire Chief Fred Windisch said that a rock that "appears to be a meteorite" crashed through James' house and landed in the kitchen, per Fox 26 Houston.

The Ponderosa Fire Department confirmed to PEOPLE that a piece of what appeared to be a meteorite crashed through James' home, adding that the "explosion" sound was most likely "the sound barrier shock wave."

NASA confirmed that a 3-foot meteor fragment hit northwestern Houston on Saturday.

"Eyewitnesses in Texas observed a bright fireball today, March 21, at 4:40 p.m. CDT. Current data indicates that the meteor became visible at 49 miles above Stagecoach," NASAwrote on X. "It moved southeast at 35,000 mph, breaking apart 29 miles above Bammel, just west of Cypress Station."

The meteorite, which weighed an estimated ton, "created a pressure wave that caused booms heard by some in the area," NASA explained. Meteorites were also produced between Willowbrook and Northgate Crossing in Texas.

The BFD responded to reports on Saturday from several witnesses of an "explosion" and the meteor sighting, saying they "saw a green flash fall from the sky, black smoke,\ and heard a loud boom." They found no evidence of an explosion.

In footage released byKHOU, captured by a witness driving in Southeast Texas on Saturday, an object can be seen from the driver's dashboard falling from the sky and bursting into flash of light.

"I saw a hole in the ceiling, the impact on the floor, and so it had to be coming down with force to come through the roof," James told Fox 26 Houston.

James said that she called the Ponderosa Fire Department, who initially told her they thought the rock was something that "fell off a plane." They later told her that the rock was most likely a fragment from a meteor that "exploded" over northern Houston.
