UK nuclear submarine deployed to Arabian Sea before Iran targets key US-UK base: reports

A British nuclear-powered submarine has been deployed to the Arabian Sea amid rising tensions in the region and came ahead of Iran's failed ballistic missile attempt targeting Diego Garcia, a key U.S.-U.K. military base in the Indian Ocean, accordingto reports.

HMS Anson — a Royal Navy Astute-class submarine armed with Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes — traveled about 5,500 miles from HMAS Stirling, near Perth, Australia, to the region earlier in March.

The submarine is reportedlyoperating in the northern Arabian Sea, positioning Britain to respond quickly if the conflict escalates.

HMS Anson periodically surfaces to maintain communications with the U.K.'s Permanent Joint Headquarters in London,GB News reported.

The deployment was said to have come shortly after the U.K. governmentauthorized the United States to useBritish military bases for defensive operations targeting Iranian missile capabilities that have threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, Downing Street said the aim of those operations was to "degrade the missile sites and capabilities" used in attacks on ships, while emphasizing that Britain does not want to be drawn into a wider regional conflict.

Tensions intensified Sunday afterIran launched two ballistic missilestoward Diego Garcia, according to multiple reports. Neither missile reached its target; one reportedly failed in flight, while the other was intercepted.

The attempted strike has raised concerns about Iran's missile range, as Diego Garcia is roughly 2,485 miles from Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi had warned Britain against supporting U.S. or Israeli military action, saying such involvement could further escalate the conflict.

Araghchi told U.K. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper that Iran views Britain's decision to allow U.S. forces to use its bases as "participation in aggression," according to his account of the call, the BBC reported.

He also criticized what he described as the U.K.'s "negative and biased" approach and demanded that it cease cooperation with the United States.

The U.K. did not allow the U.S. to use its bases for initial offensive strikes against Iran but later granted permission for defensive operations in response to Iranian missile threats.

Downing Street said: "We didn't participate in the initial strikes, and we're not getting drawn into the wider war."

Tehran has said it would exercise what it calls its right to self-defense if threatened.

Meanwhile, the U.K. Ministry of Defence said Sunday that Royal Air Force assets, including Typhoon jets, remain engaged in defensive operations in the region.

The ministry added that British forces have helped counter Iranian drone threats whilecoordinating closely with allies.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the U.K. Ministry of Defence for comment.

Possible Meteorite Crashes into a Houston Home, Tearing Through Roof and 2 Stories

On Saturday, March 21, a possible meteorite crashed through Sherrie James' roof in northwest Harris County, leaving a hole and damaging two stories

NEED TO KNOW

  • NASA confirmed the 3-foot meteor fragment weighed about a ton and traveled at 35,000 mph before breaking apart

  • Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and a flash of light from the meteorite in the Houston area on Saturday

A Houston resident was left stunned after a meteorite crashed through the roof of her home.

Sherrie James was shocked to discover that a heavy rock had crashed through the roof and two stories of her home in northwest Harris County on Saturday, March 21, after seemingly falling from the sky,Fox 26 Houstonreported.

The crash occurred after reports of a sound like an "explosion" and sightings of "a possible meteor" near Highway 50 at Wiedeville Road and surrounding areas, the Brenham Fire Department (BFD)wroteon Facebook.

"[When] I saw the rock … the first thing that came to my mind was, it's a meteor," James told Fox 26 Houston. "It's very heavy and it doesn't look like cement or like a normal rock, but it's just the weight of it — you can tell it's something different."

Ponderosa Fire Chief Fred Windisch said that a rock that "appears to be a meteorite" crashed through James' house and landed in the kitchen, per Fox 26 Houston.

The Ponderosa Fire Department confirmed to PEOPLE that a piece of what appeared to be a meteorite crashed through James' home, adding that the "explosion" sound was most likely "the sound barrier shock wave."

NASA confirmed that a 3-foot meteor fragment hit northwestern Houston on Saturday.

"Eyewitnesses in Texas observed a bright fireball today, March 21, at 4:40 p.m. CDT. Current data indicates that the meteor became visible at 49 miles above Stagecoach," NASAwrote on X. "It moved southeast at 35,000 mph, breaking apart 29 miles above Bammel, just west of Cypress Station."

The meteorite, which weighed an estimated ton, "created a pressure wave that caused booms heard by some in the area," NASA explained. Meteorites were also produced between Willowbrook and Northgate Crossing in Texas.

The BFD responded to reports on Saturday from several witnesses of an "explosion" and the meteor sighting, saying they "saw a green flash fall from the sky, black smoke,\ and heard a loud boom." They found no evidence of an explosion.

In footage released byKHOU, captured by a witness driving in Southeast Texas on Saturday, an object can be seen from the driver's dashboard falling from the sky and bursting into flash of light.

"I saw a hole in the ceiling, the impact on the floor, and so it had to be coming down with force to come through the roof," James told Fox 26 Houston.

James said that she called the Ponderosa Fire Department, who initially told her they thought the rock was something that "fell off a plane." They later told her that the rock was most likely a fragment from a meteor that "exploded" over northern Houston.

NCAA Rhode Island Alabama Basketball

The Crimson Tide haven't made it that far since 1998.

"We have a program that every sport is good," senior Jessica Timmons said Sunday. "We want this time to be for women's basketball, and I think this will be proven this year."

Getting there means sixth-seeded Alabama (24-10) must beat Louisville (28-7), a team thatnearly took down South Carolinain December. The Cardinals have all 12 Sweet 16 berths under coach Jeff Walz as one of six programs to reach the regional semifinals at least 10 times since 2011.

Coach Kristy Curry said the Crimson Tide must "be Bama." That means win the rebounding battle limiting second-chance looks and avoiding turnovers leading to fast breaks.

Alabama played against its tendencies in beatingRhode Island 68-55in the first round. The Crimson Tide attempted a season-low 10 3-pointers but had their best overall shooting performance in a month at 53.2% (25-for-47).

Walz isn't changing his game plan against Alabama, which beat three AP Top 25 teams this season.

"You've just got to do the best you can to play one-on-one defense, try to keep them in front of you, and make them score over you," Walz said. "Rhode Island was really trying to turn the heat up some, which was, I think, making Alabama drive more, and they did a great job of finishing."

The relatively few 3-pointers weren't the only difference for Alabama in its win. Junior Essence Cody scored 19 points in the first round making a trio of 3s.

Laura Ziegler said the third-seeded Cardinals will respect the 6-foot-4 post player's perimeter abilities but not overthink things. Cody averages 11.7 points a game for second making more than 60% of her inside shots this season.

"I think whenever you go into a game like that, you also look at what would be the most dangerous, like, what are you expecting?" Ziegler said. "You see a little bit over more games than just that one."

The 6-2 Ziegler has been a key leader for Louisville, transferring to the Cardinals after three seasons with St. Joseph's. A three-time All-Atlantic Conference 10 honoree, she became Walz's floor leader earning All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors on a team with several talented sophomores.

Ziegler is one of three Cardinals averaging more than 11 points a game. Tajianna Roberts called her Danish teammate "a pressure release" on the court, helping get the ball up the court.

"But off the court she has taught me to be a leader in so many different ways," said Roberts, the sophomore guard and Louisville's leading scorer with 11.4 points a game. "I don't know if she knows it, but I'm going to take what she has taught me to next year."

Hey there!

The Cardinals easilybeat Vermontin the first round with sophomore Mackenly Randolph scored a career-high 20 to lead the third-seeded Cardinals and matched her career-high with 11 rebounds.

The 6-foot forward has four career double-doubles, all in the Cardinals' last five games. Walz called her style of play as "bully ball," with Curry describing the daughter of 17-year NBA star Zach Randolph as a "match-up nightmare," especially on transition.

"She infuses them with the energy and just brings a lot of toughness and grit," Curry said. "I think they're really good around her. I mean, obviously, their versatility and depth as a team is what their size really impresses me… We've seen this type of size consistently. We need to draw from our experiences of competing in the SEC."

On the line

The winner gets a trip to Fort Worth 3 Region for a game Saturday against second-seeded Michigan, a92-63 winner overNorth Carolina State on Sunday.

NC State's Zoe Brooks out vs. Michigan in NCAA Tournament with injury

NC State will attempt to pull off what would be the biggest upset in the Women's NCAA Tournament so far this year without starting guard Zoe Brooks.

USA TODAY Sports

Brooks has been ruled out for the No. 7 Wolfpack's second-round matchup with No. 2 Michigan on the Wolverines' home floor in Ann Arbor. The junior suffered a foot injury in the Wolfpack's first-round win over Tennessee. She played just 17 minutes, scoring eight points.

Brooks is NC State's second leading scorer this season at 16.1 points per game and leads the Wolfpack in assists with 4.3. She also averages 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. NC State is 3-0 this season when she scores 25 or more points.

NC State coach Wes Moore said Brooks didn't practice on Saturday and was wearing a walking boot.

"Obviously, the first priority is going to be her health and making sure she's not at risk as far as her future goes," Moore said. "I've got a lot of confidence in (freshman guard Ky'She Lunan) and I think the other players do as well. That helps. Still not the same as having Zoe out there, a junior with her experience and all that she's done, but either way we'll be ready to play."

The Wolfpack will likely have to lean heavily on Zam Jones for scoring. The sophomore guard scored a career-high 30 points in the win over Tennessee. Junior forward Khamil Pierre is also averaging 16.8 points and 12.1 rebounds per game this season.

NC State hasn't played Michigan since 2018, when the Wolfpack and Wolverines faced off in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.

A win for NC State would mark its seventh trip to the Sweet 16 in the last eight NCAA Tournaments.

Report: Syracuse hero Gerry McNamara returning as coach

Gerry McNamara, who led Syracuse to its lone national title in 2003 as the starting point guard, is close to finalizing a deal to be the school's next head coach, ESPN reported on Sunday.

Field Level Media

McNamara, 42, has been the head coach at Siena the last two seasons, guiding the Saints to the NCAA Tournament this season after winning the MAAC conference tournament. As a No. 16 seed, Siena gave top-seeded Duke a scare in the first round on Thursday before losing 71-65.

Before taking over at Siena, McNamara served as an assistant coach under Jim Boeheim and Adrian Autry for 15 seasons.

Per the report, McNamara has had multiple discussions -- virtually and in person -- with Syracuse athletic director Bryan Blair over the past week.

During the process, school officials reportedly emphasized a commitment to being among the top third of ACC schools in terms of NIL.

Along with helping Syracuse win the national title during his freshman year alongside Carmelo Anthony, McNamara holds the program records for 3-pointers (400), 3-point attempts (1,131), free-throw percentage (88.8%) and minutes played (4,799). An All-Big East honoree three times, he started all 135 games of his career from 2002-06 and had his No. 3 jersey retired in 2023.

McNamara returned to his alma mater in 2009 as a graduate assistant, then was elevated to an assistant in 2011 under Boeheim. He received another promotion, to associate head coach, when Autry was named Boeheim's successor in 2023.

McNamara left for Siena in 2024, posting a 37-30 record in two seasons. Before this spring, the Saints had not made the NCAA Tournament since 2010.

Autry, also a former star player at Syracuse, was fired earlier this month after the Orange missed out on the NCAA Tournament in his three seasons at the helm.

Syracuse did not qualify for each of the last five NCAA Tournaments, which represents the school's longest dry spell since 1967-72. From 1973 to 2021, the Orange participated in 39 of the 48 tournaments.
