Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will be limited for the start of training camp due to back soreness.

Head coach Sean McVay made the announcement from the first day of training camp Tuesday. He told reporters that Stafford has "back soreness that kind of crept up" in the offseason. Further details of the issue weren't clear.

Per McVay, Stafford will spend the first five days of training camp on the side with team athletic trainers and working separately from the Rams' offense.

Stafford's been the Rams' starting quarterback for the past four seasons since joining the team in a trade from the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2021 season. The Rams won the Super Bowl in Stafford's first season with the team and have made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

The Rams lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round after advancing out of the wild-card round with a win over the Minnesota Vikings last season. With Stafford back, the Rams are hoping to continue contending for the playoffs in 2025.

McVay also provided an update on Pro Bowl running back Kyren Williams, who is seeking a new contract as training camp starts. Williams showed up for the start of camp and intends to practice amid negotiations.

"For me, there was no decision," Williams told reporters of his decision not to hold out. "I play football. That's what I love."

McVay said the Rams intend to sit down with Williams' agent Drew Rosenhaus on Wednesday to resume negotiations. Williams is approaching the final season of his rookie contract.
