Two years after Margot Robbie's live-action Barbie became a global hit at the box office, the love for Mattel's iconic doll has not faded. Illumination, the studio behind the Minions franchise, and Mattel Studios are producing the first-ever Barbie animated movie for the big screen, PEOPLE confirms. Deadline was first to report the news.

The iconic doll by Mattel has appeared in 52 animated movies and streaming TV films since 2001, with the most recent being 2025's Barbie and Teresa: Recipe for Friendship.

Reps for Illumination, Universal and Mattel declined to comment.

Before Barbie achieved its box-office milestone, Robbie, 33, told Collider she always had a good feeling about how well it would perform.

"I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they're brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director," Robbie said, noting one example she gave in "naming anything that's been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years" was "dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg."

"I was like, 'And now you've got Barbie and Greta Gerwig,' " Robbie continued. "And I think I told them that it'd make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay!"

The movie's success led Mattel, the toy company that owns the Barbie brand, to make plans to adapt nearly 20 additional Mattel properties — including a Polly Pocket movie, for the big screen.
