"The Shade Purple is a guide
The Colour Purple remake star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was disheartened that the movie seemed to chop out a central queer story line.
"The Shade Purple is a guide about Black lesbians. Whether or not the choice was made to concentrate on that or not within the cinematic iterations of The Shade Purple, it's still a movie about Black lesbians," Ellis-Taylor, 54, advised BuzzFeed in an interview revealed on Friday, February 16. "Individuals can attempt to say the story is about sisterhood, however it's a story about Black lesbians. Period."
She continued: "What is tough for me is that when we now have those areas where we will honor the reality of that, we walk away from it. We suppress it. We disguise it. We sanitize it. Within the sanitizing of it, someone like me — understanding that The Shade Purple is a e-book about Black lesbians — seems at that and thinks, 'You're sanitizing me and my pals, and different people who I really like and adore. Why?' [If it's because] you don't need to be offensive, you then're saying to the world that I'm offensive."
Ellis-Taylor, who played Mama in the 2023 remake of The Colour Purple, publicly got here out as bisexual in 2022. She advised Variety that June it was "essential to say as a result of I'm not alone."
