KISS frontman Paul Stanley was spotted in a rare sighting in Los Angeles after a quick coffee run, and the "Detroit Rock City" singer looked unrecognizable without his iconic makeup.

Stanley opted for a casual look with a white button-down shirt, jeans and tennis shoes as he carried a to-go tray of beverages from Starbucks in the photos shared by the Daily Mail on June 26. The rocker was all smiles and had his hair styled in his usual way with his signature long, black hair framing his face.

While there's no denying that Stanley's long hair goes hand-in-hand with his bigger-than-life onstage persona, he's previously spoken about one of the reasons he keeps his hair styled that way.

"I was born deaf on my right side and I had a birth defect. I had what's called microtia, which is basically not having an ear. Having a crumpled mass of cartilage," the glam rock icon said when he sat down with Dan Rather for The Big Interview in 2019.

Stanley was born with level 3 Microtia, a congenital deformity that "happens when the external ear is missing completely, and he admitted that the condition took a toll on his confidence and social skills.

"When you have something physical that sets you apart from people it makes you really a target of unrelenting scrutiny and sometimes ridicule," he continued. "And, quite honestly, the idea of becoming famous was a way to push it in people's faces and go, 'You see, you should have been nicer to me.'"

Despite his insecurities when he was younger, Stanley has always had an eye for fashion and even designed many of KISS' iconic stage costumes. He once explained that style was his way of embodying the confidence he worked so hard to build.

"Clothes don't make the man, but done properly they perhaps allow you to put forward a first impression that is indicative of who you are or, in other cases, how you would like to be perceived," he said in 2015.

For Stanley, every part of his image, from his signature hair to his wardrobe, has always served a purpose.
