Two state troopers were shot while responding to a deadly domestic dispute in northeastern Pennsylvania on Thursday, according to multiple law enforcement officials, with Pennsylvania State Police describing the shooting as an ambush.

The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. following a "call involving possible gunfire," Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris told reporters.

When the troopers responded to a Susquehanna County home where a woman said she was involved in a domestic dispute, a man exchanged gunfire with the troopers, according to multiple law enforcement officials.

"Upon their arrival, they were immediately fired upon and ambushed," Paris said.

One trooper was shot in the chest and the back and needed surgery, the officials said, and another trooper was shot in the arm.

The female caller was pronounced dead, the officials said.

An EMS worker was also injured while "trying to help others at the scene," Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said.

The suspect fled the scene and barricaded himself in a nearby barn, according to the officials.

Police said he refused to comply with commands, and the law enforcement officials said tactical teams shot and killed him. The suspect, who was not named, was armed with a rifle, according to police.

The suspect was later confirmed dead, and authorities say there is no threat to the public. The scene remains active as investigators work to piece together exactly what happened.

The troopers, identified as Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, were seriously hurt and are hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Perechinsky was able to apply a tourniquet to his partner, Paris said.

"Despite both of their patrol cars being riddled with bullets, a third trooper was able to get in and evacuate them," Paris said.

Paris said the two injured troopers are "very lucky to be alive."

"He quite likely almost saved the life of his partner," Shapiro told reporters.
