The Santa Barbara division of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had a surprise sheep herding on their hands when a flock got free of their enclosures.

On Wednesday, June 25, the CHP shared eye-widening images of the incident on its official Facebook account. The photos show over 300 sheep walking together on a street near Mountain Drive. The post explained that the farm animals caused a traffic jam, which was an unexpected and unusual hassle for locals.

"300+ Sheep on the Lamb!" read the pun-filled release from CHP. "Turns out, the grass wasn't greener on the other side — but that didn't stop them from trying!"

CHP officers "hoofed it to the scene" to assist the owner with rounding up the "wooly wanderers" and getting them safely back to their pens.

"We're happy to report the flock is back where they belong, and everyone is baaahck to their normal routine," noted the post. "Just another day in Santa Barbara — where even traffic jams can be fluffy."

Locals, especially drivers, are advised to keep their eyes on the road and be vigilant for sheep that may become loose in the future.

The sheep herd joins other adventurous animals who've decided to take an impromptu field trip from home in 2025.

Back in June, a zebra ran loose in the streets of Tennessee for a week before being captured by the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office (RCSO). The zebra, named Ed, became an overnight celebrity as locals spotted the animal trotting down neighborhood streets for days. Ed later appeared in a viral video, which showed the animal being airlifted from a pasture near the Buchanan Estates subdivision, a statement shared on Facebook from the sheriff's office confirmed at the time.

The statement also added, "Rutherford County Sheriff's Office [RCSO] is happy to report Tango 82 aviation crews located Zebra Ed and returned him to his owner Sunday."
