Authorities have abandoned their search of an Idaho forest after they tracked down a man who they believed may have been the Army veteran wanted in the killings of his three daughters and ruled him out as Travis Decker.

"The person reported by the tipster was located and identified," Derryl Spencer, chief deputy U.S. Marshal for the District of Idaho, said in an email Thursday. "We have confirmed this was not the fugitive."

The U.S. Marshal's Office said this week that a man who matched Decker's description was seen in Sawtooth National Forest, east of Boise.

Michael Leigh, supervisory deputy with the U.S. Marshal's Service in Idaho, said Thursday that the search is no longer focused on Idaho. Investigators are working on developing leads, he said.

Decker, 32, has been on the run since he failed to return his daughters from a May 30 visitation. The girls, ages 9, 8 and 5, were found dead in a remote area east of Seattle on June 2. They had been zip-tied and had bags over their heads, authorities have said.

Authorities have described Decker, who was an active member of the Washington State National Guard, as an avid outdoorsman who would spend months in the wilderness.

Law enforcement officials have said they've investigated "dozens and dozens" of apparent sightings, but Decker appears to have only been seen once, in early June, in the Blewitt Pass area of Washington State.

He is wanted on suspicion of three counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, a federal charge.
