Every generation gets its own Superman — or multiple Supermen, in some cases.

One of our most enduring pop culture figures, the super-powered do-gooder has inspired moviegoers, TV viewers, and comic book readers since his invention in 1938. After all, an alien from the planet Krypton coming to help save our conflict-ridden world has never really gone out of style.

More than a dozen actors have etched their names in history by inhabiting the role of Superman through various film and TV adaptations. The latest is David Corenswet, whom critics and audiences have praised for his warm, sincere interpretation of the title character in 2025's Superman.

Ahead, we look back on 15 of the most notable actors to portray Superman since 1940.
